GRCC Culinary Alum Daniel Wilson Nominated for Australian Restauranteur Award

Daniel Wilson, Owner of the Huxtable Restaurant in Fitzroy, South AustraliaKudos to Chef Daniel Wilson, a finalist for the 2012 Electrolux Australian Young Restaurateur Award.  Wilson is a 1997 graduate of GRCC’s hospitality program and now runs the Huxtable Restaurant in Fitzroy, South Australia.

From the description of the Appetite for Excellence awards:

This is the ultimate national awards program for young hospitality professionals. Overseen and judged by 24 of Australia’s most successful chefs, restaurateurs, and industry leaders, the program gives participants a unique opportunity to develop skills and establish supportive networks whilst creating a sustainable industry for young professionals and the community. These judges include: Guy Grossi, Chris Taylor, Peter Gilmore, Mark Best, Christine Manfield, Philip Johnson and Luke Mangan.

Searching Australia for emerging talent within the restaurant and catering industry, the Awards are more than a competition. They aim to inspire and support future industry leaders through unique educational elements, career opportunities and enviable prizes.

GRCC’s ESP Supports Kids’ Food Basket

Kids’ Food Basket feeds sack suppers to 4,900 food-insecure kids in Grand Rapids who get breakfast and lunch in school but are otherwise not sure where supper will come from. Over 150 volunteers per day raise food and money donations, assemble and deliver 4,900 sack suppers every school day and 2,500 on weekends.

Portage Central trio boosts NCAA tourney-bound Michigan State baseball team

[...Trey] Popp transferred to MSU from Grand Rapids Community College in 2010 and made an immediate impact. The 6-foot, 180-pound left-hander was second on the team with 21 appearances out of the bullpen. He had a 4-3 record, struck out 28 and walked 13 in 33 1/3 innings.  (More)
