Doing what has to be done at Grand Rapids Community College

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Grand Rapids Community College Trustee Ellen James said it best: “We have to do something. There are things that absolutely have to be done.” Burdened with aging buildings and infrastructure, and limited by an overwhelming defeat at the polls, GRCC leaders went back to the drawing board to draft a palatable plan to borrow money to fund much-needed campus repairs.  (More)

Immigrant Stories Cause Activists to Demand Adoption of Family Waiver

Echoing Tolstoy’s assertion, “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way,” two couples facing separations due to immigration law toured Michigan last week to tell their poignant stories. [...] Cayla Roberts’ personal narrative is particularly moving because she faces deportation despite the fact her original arrival in the United States was against her will. [...] She graduated with a 4.0 GPA from Grand Rapids Community College (whose Vice President for College Advancement Andy Bowne introduced her at the press conference) and with a 3.97 from Western Michigan University.  (More)

KDL’s Teen Poetry Contest Winners

Earlier this year I wrote about the Kent District Library’s Word Wise, KDL’s ninth annual teen poetry contest. It was open to all, aspiring, teem poets [sic]. [...] Once they narrowed down the entries, the “official” judge, David Cope took over. Revision to Firearms, Explosives or Weapons Policy

Added the following statement to the Firearms, Explosives or Weapons policy:

This policy does not apply to law enforcement officials who are carrying weapons in the course of their duties. It also does not apply to items and materials that are approved by the College for educational purposes.

Updates to Copyright Policy

June 7, 2012

GRCC’s Copyright policy (3.0) has been revised and the following changes have been made:

  • Retained only general content in the Policy Statement section
  • Moved contents of Section B through F of the Policy Statement to the Procedures
  • Updated Section F to include process of how to verify coverage under GRCC’s annual copyright license
  • Added Section G to the Procedures which references Permission Request for Duplication of Print Materials
  • Added Procedure for affixing copyright statement to copiers
  • Moved FAQ to an LLC web page and added the link under related documents
  • Converted all FAQ topics to questions
  • Includes requirement for periodic audits of copyright compliance
  • Added revision date
  • Added “Students” to the Who Should Read This Policy section
  • Added 2 URLs to the Related Documents section:

1. GRCC Information Technology Acceptable Use Agreement

2. GRCC Student Code of Conduct

CWIS and Online Centers Maintenance Scheduled for 6/7/12-6/8/12

CWIS, PeopleSoft Student and the Online Centers, will be down from 9:30 PM Thursday, June 7th until 7:00 AM Friday, June 8th for scheduled maintenance. No others services will be affected.
