Grand Rapids Community College’s two Learning Corners, West Side Learning Corner and the Learning Corner at Wealthy, held their annual joint graduation ceremony last week.

The graduation ceremony was for students who completed their high school equivalency test (GED) and for those who have attained the “Level of Proficiency” in their English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and was held in partnership with Lake Michigan Credit Union and Huntington Bank – both businesses have been longtime community partners active in helping students reach their goals.

GRCC’s Learning Corners, located at 1154 Wealthy St. SE and 665 Seward St. NW, have a distinctive purpose: to provide access to higher education to adults who may not think of themselves as “college material,” but are comfortable in a friendly location within their neighborhood.

GRCC Athletic Department Awarded Charlie Chanter All Sports Trophy From MCCA

June 11, 2012

rp_primary_grccallpsort

Well-deserved congratulations go to GRCC’s Athletic Department which claimed the Charlie Chanter Michigan Community College Athletic Association’s All Sports Trophy for the first time since 1999.

The trophy is awarded to one of the MCCAA’s participating schools each year based on where each team finishes within the MCCAA. Points are awarded to each member college based on each team’s rank in a MCCAA sponsored sport with bonus points added for teams who finish as an MCCAA champion or runner-up.

GRCC’s Athletic programs have had a banner year under first year Athletic Director Charles Wells with four teams–Men’s Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball and Women’s Tennis–making national tournament appearances.

GRCC’s Softball, Golf and Women’s Basketball teams also made post-season appearances, but were not in contention for a national title as they did not advance past the NJCAA Region XII Tournaments in their respective sports

7 of 8 teams making post season compeition with four playing for national titles is something any athletic department would be proud of.

Second only to Lansing Community College with 14 total wins since 1958, GRCC has now won the MCCAA’s All Sports Trophy 13 times.

GRCC Cracking Down on Boarders
Leigh Ann Towne | FOX 17 Reporter | 6:36 p.m. EDT, June 8, 2012

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Skateboarders and longboarders have become quite a problem on the campus of Grand Rapids Community College, according to Lt. Scott Merlo, with campus police. “It’s a safety issue for our visitors; if they are walking and the longboards are going at a fast rate down Lyon Street , more than that it’s a trespassing issue for us, and that’s the key also, we’re not here, we don’t want people here in the middle of the night that don’t belong here.”  (More)
