Condolences to the Family and Friends of Mohamed Elmi

On Sunday, June 8, 2012 a GRCC student named Mohamed Elmi passed away from cancer and was buried yesterday in accordance with Muslim religious tradition.  He was an extraordinary student who was active in student activities and was interviewed about his native Somalia for the Rapidian here in Grand Rapids:

Mary Brown is an adjunct professor at GRCC and shared her experience with Mohamed:

“I was able to sit with the women at the home and was impressed by the warm a caring group of women from far and near who surrounded the mother and sisters in their time of grief.

Mohamed was a very dear student who I helped to connect with a mentor at GVSU and to a local law firm in hope that he could realize his dreams to study international law and policies and later obtain his PhD. Mohamed connected with GRCC via the Pathways program and later enrolled in credit courses and was one of my PY097 students.

Mohamed had gained so much from his engagement at GRCC and begin to change his mindset and his behavior. He became a shining example to his sisters, who are now deeply involved in education because of his examples. Mohamed wanted to bring change to the world and help his family and people back in Somalia.

Mohamed was an outstanding student, a wonderful human being and I am profoundly sad his family loss and the loss to society. Mohamed was a testimony to how education can make change in one’s life.”
