Google Glass: West Michigan online physics teacher takes students on virtual field trip to Switzerland

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Google’s wearable computer, Google Glass, isn’t widely available for purchase yet, but the tech world is buzzing and a West Michigan online physics teacher is one of a lucky few to try out the futuristic frames.

… Andrew Vanden Heuvel, who teaches for Michigan Virtual School, Calvin College and Grand Rapids Community College, said his journey to Geneva, Switzerland, began after a call from Google.

Jazz vocalist Gregory Porter, violinist Regina Carter coming to St. Cecilia Music Center

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Jazz vocalist Gregory Porter and jazz violinist Regina Carter are a part of St. Cecilia Music Centers 2013-14 jazz series.

… Special guests for the evening will be their fathers: Duane Davis, formerly director of vocal music at Grand Rapids Community College and now a professor of jazz voice at Western Michigan; and Paul Brewer, jazz trombonist and director of instrumental music at Aquinas College.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – If you’re a movie lover, make sure to mark next week off on your calendar. The Grand Rapids Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday and this year’s festival is bringing amazing works of cinematography to several different locations across downtown.

… On May 17, Grand Rapids Community College will host a Producer’s Brunch at 11 a.m. at the Wisner-Bottrall Applied Technology Center. That evening, a free outdoor screening of the film “Bicycle Dreams” will take place at Rosa Parks Circle. “Bicycle Dreams” was named the Best Feature Documentary at the 2009 Grand Rapids Film Festival and played at eleven other international film festivals.

Sisters from neighboring schools square off in OK Red girls tennis tournament

GRAND HAVEN — Tim Buck and Brian Hodge became acquainted with each other more than two decades ago through the sport of tennis.

… Demetrius Buck and Clayton Hodge were counterparts in high school and met regularly over the course of four years.

“The boys played against each for four years and then they were the teammates at Grand Rapids Community College,” Tim Buck said. “And then the girls came around, and I just think it’s really cool to have two tennis families like ours, and to have the kids follow in what we grew up doing.”

Muskegon Community College in position to qualify for national golf tournament

MUSKEGON, MI — After winning the state title, the Muskegon Community College golf team is taking a run at qualifying for the nationals.

Hope College rewind: Baseball takes two from Aquinas College

Holland — The Hope College baseball team beat Aquinas College 4-2 and 6-3 on Tuesday at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park.

… Hope fifth at Calvin invite

Josh Cannon and Jared Lehman both shot a 10-over-par 83 at Pilgrims Run to lead Hope to a fifth-place finish at the nine-team Calvin College Spring Invitational. Both tied for 16th place individually.

Hope totaled a team score of 334, as did Albion College and Olivet College. Davenport University (318) won, followed by Cornerstone University (325), Grand Rapids Community College (330) and Calvin College (331).

Muskegon Community College recap: Softball team tops .500 mark

MUSKEGON, MI — The softball team at Muskegon Community College was able to dodge the raindrops and snowflakes to move its record above the .500 mark.

… GOLF: MCC will be looking to post a second consecutive tournament win when it returns to action Monday for the Grand Rapids Community College Invitational at Egypt Valley Country Club, weather permitting. MCC also plays Friday at the Western Conference meet at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.

‘Musical Moods’ concert scheduled for April 19, 2013

“Musical Moods,” a Music Department concert benefiting the Albert P. Smith Endowment, features instrumental and choral ensembles and select student soloists. It starts at 7:30 p.m. April 19, 2013, in the St. Cecilia Music Center’s Royce Auditorium.

Guitarist Mark Kroos to perform April 9, 2013

The Grand Rapids Community College International Guitar Series presents Mark Kroos, Double Neck Guitar Wizard, on 7:30 p.m. April 9, 2013, in the Recital Hall (room 200) of the GRCC Music Center at Ransom and Lyon.

Admission is $7 for students and seniors, and $10 for everyone else; $1 parking is available in the GRCC student parking ramp with a GRCC guest parking voucher sold at the door.

Mark Kroos plays 2 guitar necks at the same time. Originally from Lansing, MI, but currently based in Williamsburg, VA, he is one of the only people in the world touring his trade. His primarily instrumental style is characterized by open harmonies, polyphonic textures, incredible tapping technique, and is as entertaining to watch as it is to listen to. Live performances burst with energy and magnetism not typical of solo guitar music. Drawing influence from folk, Celtic, indie, and even punk rock artists as well as other great guitarists such as Michael Hedges, Phil Keaggy, Tommy Emmanuel and Leo Kottke, Mark Kroos has developed his own edge to the acoustic guitar.

Mark’s debut solo album, And Grace Will Lead Me Home was released in January, 2010 to rave reviews. The album features Mark on both double and single neck guitars with no overdubbing and also employs his own innovative studio technique of separating the two signals from the double neck for stereo purposes. Tracks from the album have been licensed for multiple productions on CNN.
