Ineligible player likely will derail Grand Rapids Community College football team’s title hopes
By Gary Bond | The Grand Rapids Press | November 16, 2009, 11:40PM
GRAND RAPIDS — The use of an ineligible football player at Grand Rapids Community College is expected to hit the program hard Tuesday when bowl invitations are announced. The National Junior College Athletic Association will release its nine bowl matchups, and GRCC (10-0 and ranked No. 3) hopes to be invited to the Citizen Bank Bowl in Pittsburg, Kan., where it would meet No. 1 Fort Scott Community College (11-0) on Dec. 6. […] GRCC athletic director Doug Wabeke would not release the name of the player, saying only the player was involved in the Oct. 3 game against Iowa Central Community College at Houseman Field that the Raiders won, 49-44. The player was in the game for only one play and remains a member of the team, Wabeke said. He emphasized it was not an academic issue with the player in question. Rather, Wabeke said, his name was omitted from a list of eligible players GRCC turned into the NJCAA at the beginning of the season. Once Wabeke learned of the omission, he self-reported GRCC to the NJCAA and submitted the name. (More) Continue reading

CEBA Employees Give Back and Create Grant Fund to Assist Students
In response to President Ender’s request for employees to give back, the GRCC Employees Benefit Association has created a scholarship fund to help students with the cost of tools and other program specific needs. “We wanted to help people who had lost their jobs and were coming to GRCC to gain additional skills but needed help in paying for tools and things they need to complete their program… credit or non-credit,” said Marty DeVries. The creation of the scholarship fund was led by Marty DeVries, Jim Steensma, and Kay Brown.
Grant awards, through the CEBA Reinvestment Opportunity Grant, will be given to students that are being trained in a Workforce Development program or something similar. This grant will assist students in purchasing tools and other resources needed for their specific program. Students must be recommended by a faculty member, and must submit a letter explaining their need for assistance. Letters will not be judged on grammar or sentence structure, but on the situation.
For more information about the fund contact Bertha Chivis in the GRCC Foundation Office or Loraine Fortuna, president of the GRCC Employees Benefit Association.
