Profiles of 2010 Giants award winners

Making their community a better place to live is a way of life for those who win Giants award — an honor that will be bestowed this year on 11 African-Americans in the Grand Rapids community.  Those receiving the awards Saturday at the annual celebration have enriched many lives already and promise to enrich many more through their leadership and commitment to helping others. Good Deeds: Pass It Forward: Students helping others in sprrit of MLK Day

More than 150 Grand Rapids Community College students and a host of others, hitting the streets of Grand Rapids Saturday to do good deeds for strangers, in hopes that they in turn, will do a good deed for someone else.  The “Pass It Forward” party, sponsored by the G.R.C.C.’s Academic Service Learning Center, was designed to celebrate the true spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Day.  (More)

Some Grand Rapids school board members pushing for town hall meeting on possible school closings

GRAND RAPIDS — Grand Rapids Public Schools needs to cut at least $9 million from its $214 million budget to operate within anticipated revenues next year.  Closing several schools is a first step toward getting there by July 1, when the school board must adopt a budget. […] Board Vice President Senita Lenear, who chairs the advisory panel, is planning to call board members to ascertain whether to schedule a forum. If held, it is to be moderated by a neutral party, possibly Grand Rapids Community College President Steven Ender.  (M0re)
