Brian Shultz (Construction Trades) Receives Campus Compact Award

Brian ShultzGRCC faculty member Brian Shultz of the Construction Trades program was recently hored with the Michigan Campus Compact Award for Service-Learning Contributions.  Nominated by his peers (including Dr. Urminda Firlan), Shultz was deemed to have made outstanding contributions in service-learning and community service while simultaneously engaging students.  From the release announcing his receipt of the award:

“Shultz commits himself to connecting construction trades, students, and the community to help make a difference in the lives of others. In 2006, he developed a partnership with Habitat for Humanity that resulted in the first Habitat LEED certified affordable home. Other projects include partnering with Goodwill Industries, Habitat, and GRCC to offer a summer construction program for transitioning felons back into the work world, and leading a team of GRCC students and staff to the Bahamas for a learning adventure on sustainable best practices. Shultz continues to move forward with his vision of community leadership by engaging students in the community while providing innovative learning opportunities.”

Chefs Vie for Spot on ‘Culinary Olympics’ Team

Star quarterback hangs back as Grand Rapids Community College sends eight players on to four-year colleges

GRAND RAPIDS — Receiver Demonte Collins hopes to sign a letter of intent with a Division II football program by the middle of the month.  Quarterback Casey Therriault likely won’t sign with anyone until after spring practice, which ends in April or early May.  Surprisingly, two of the best players from a GRCC team that climbed as high as No. 3 in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll last season aren’t among those who have signed this week to continue their football careers at four-year colleges.  (More)
