GRCC speaker Angela Davis says the fight for rights continues

GRAND RAPIDS — Slavery was never truly abolished, but takes different forms today, says Angela Davis, who pledges to continue fighting for people she believes remain oppressed in American society.  Davis, a former Black Panther and Communist Party candidate for vice president, spoke to a near-capacity crowd of about 1,500 people Wednesday at Fountain Street Church as part of Grand Rapids Community College‘s Diversity Lecture Series.  (More)

Kent County plans for Grand Rapids area’s first Restaurant Week

GRAND RAPIDS — Eateries throughout Kent County would celebrate the region’s first Restaurant Week in November under a plan being developed by the Grand Rapids/Kent County Convention and Visitors Bureau.  The event is expected to be a celebration of the region’s various culinary options, its chefs and Grand Rapids Community College‘s well-known culinary school.  (More)

Nominate a GRCC/JC alumnus to receive the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award

GRCC’s College Advancement office is inviting all to nominate a GRCC/JC alumnus to receive the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award.  The Distinguished Alumni Award honors a GRCC/JC alumnus who has achieved substantial public recognition for his/her accomplishments or success.  Nominations are due March 1st, 2010. To be eligible for nomination, the nominee should have:

  1. Earned 30 or more credit hours from GRCC/JC, and
  2. Earned the respect and trust of his/her associates in his/her chosen field, or
  3. Made substantial contributions to the good of his/her fellow human beings or be recognized as an outstanding practitioner of his/her profession or vocation, or
  4. Served as a motivational force for others in a positive manner.

Welcome to the World Emma Hope and Abigail Faith Hamilton

Congratulations to Kristie Hamilton and her husband Nathan Hamilton (Web Analyst in IT) on the birth of their twin daughters, Emma Hope and Abigail Faith Hamilton. Emma arrived on 2/1/2010 at 9:12 a.m. weighing in at 5 lbs. 3 oz and measuring in at 17 inches long.  Abigail arrived at 9:13am weighing in at 4lbs. 13oz and measuring in at 17 inches long as well.  Isabella Grace (16 month old older sister) is patiently waiting for her baby sisters to come home.  Mom and babies are all doing well.
