Second class to begin wind energy tech training

Holland, MI — Six months of planning ended in a unique deal Monday between Holland’s Energetx and Grand Rapids Community College. The deal — in which Energetx employees can opt for state-paid manufacturing classes by GRCC — will be funded by the Michigan New Jobs Training Program.  (More)

GRCC assistant’s experience helps Raiders make NJCAA Division II national tournament

GRAND RAPIDS — Kelly McEwen’s first impression of Derrick Owens at a Siena Heights College High Exposure Basketball Camp stuck with him for 27 years.  So when the first-year Grand Rapids Community College men’s basketball coach started the search for an assistant and heard Owens had relocated to Grand Rapids, McEwen immediately placed a call.   (More)

GRCC’s men’s basketball team will be competing in the NJCAA National Tournament this next week beginning with its first game on Wednesday March 17, 2010 at Noon (*Note corrected time).  The game can be heard online at www.michigansportsradio.com (and clicking on the “listen live” or “GRCC” links).  Click here for a full tournament schedule.

Fast facts about the men’s Raider Basketball team:

  • 19-8 record (going into NJCAA National Tournament) 10-6 in MCCAA Western Conference (3rd Place)
  • Won the Region XII Tournament for only the second time in school history (1995 only other year) and thus earned the right to play in National Championship Tournament. Bradley Whitby (Godwin Heights HS) made the All-Tournament Team with James Thomas (GR Christian HS) winning the Tournament MVP.
  • 1st Year Head Coach Kelly McEwen (previously the Women’s Head Coach) not only led the team to a National Tournament, but was recognized as the Region XII District 8 Coach of the Year.
  • James Thomas is 1st Team All Region & 1st Team All Conference. Jason Pratt (Merrill HS) is 3rd Team All Conference, with Bradley Whitby & Quinntrai Lampkins (Loy Norrix HS) are both Honorable Mention All Conference.
  • The team will be playing at Danville Area Community College (Danville, IL) in the NJCAA Division II Men’s National Championship Tournament, which is a 16 team field.
