GRCC Police Academy Intern Assists in Foiling Arson

Earlier this month, Zac Gregory (currently a GRCC student in the Police Academy, and son of Sandy Gregory in the Admissions Office) assisted in stopping an arson and the apprehension of the suspect.  From the Sand Lake Police Department press release:

“The Sand Lake Police Department arrested 48 year old Gerald Krug on March 14 on a charge of Arson – Preparation to Burn Property over $20,000.  While on regular foot patrol at approximately 3:00 AM Sand Lake Police Officer Steve Brandow and Sand Lake Police Intern Zac Gregory observed a fire in the back window of a vacant building at 20 W. Lake St.  They also observed Gerald Krug leaving the scene.  Officer Brandow apprehended Krug while Intern Gregory successfully extinguished the fire.”

Wellness Opportunity: Neither Pudgy nor Bulky

Neither Pudgy nor Bulky or cardiovascular vs strength training for maximum fat loss – Friday, April 16, 2010  9:30-11 a.m.  This course is an overview of the differences between the effects of cardiovascular training and resistance training on the body and its fat burning processes including examples of both types of fitness routines and the tools necessary to measure their effectiveness.

  • Define and understand the impact of resistance training on fat loss
  • Differentiate between isometric and isotonic forms of resistance training.
  • Compare the immediate and long-term effects of cardio and strength training
  • Define the essential components of optimum fat loss focused fitness regime
  • Design a 15 min. personalized desk-side workout routine

The SUPER Dollar — How to use your tax free income to pay for medical expenses, child care, and save for retirement to supplement your MPSERS pension.

The IRS allows you to keep your Federal, State, Local, and FICA tax money to pay for medical, dental, and vision expenses, as well as child care expenses. The IRS also allows you to use Federal, State, and Local tax money to save for your retirement. This course will discuss how to take advantage of various tax saving strategies. This course will also cover the MPSERS pension, and assist you in knowing how much you will receive when you retire.

Training: Using Online Tutorials for Microsoft 2007

This class will assist participants in getting familiar with using CustomGuide’s online tutorials and raise awareness of self-paced online learning opportunities.  This course will assist users in 1) Accessing the CustomGuide website; 2) Navigating the Custom Guide tutorials; 3) Getting professional development credit for online tutorials.

Want to learn one specific function?  One of the best features of this online training is its “search” capability.  Just type in your topic and the program will provide you with the information you need.  This course is for any GRCC employee.

GRCC offers first U.S. wind energy safety training program

Holland, MI – Grand Rapids Community College says its Grand Rapids and Holland campuses will become the first U.S. sites to offer a globally-recognized safety certification program for the wind energy industry.  The YES Safety Technology, or YST, safety certification program trains students to safely work in the tight spaces and extreme heights of on- and off-shore wind turbines, officials said. The school Tuesday signed a license agreement with the Spain- and United Kingdom-based firms that coordinate the program.  (More)
