Volunteers Needed for Secchia Institute Cake Design Exam

Chef Rango of GRCC’s Secchia Institute needs your help with a practical exam for her advanced decorating class: she’s looking for 14 volunteers who would be interested in having a student design and create a free cake for an occasion on the dates of April 12 and April 19, 2010.

Details:

  • Volunteers need to be able to meet with the students on 4/12 or 4/19 at 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. for a direct consultation with the student in the Spectrum Theatre Building.
  • The cake would then be finished that evening and available for pickup the following day between 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • The cake cannot be a wedding cake, however the students will be offering Birthday, Anniversary , or other occasion cakes.
  • We are limited to 8” rounds or 1/4 or ½ sheet cakes.

Those interested  may contact Chef Rango at (616) 234-4007 for consideration between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. before April 9th. The cakes would be free to those who would participate. First come , first served.

Editorial: Holland battery plant an economic boost

A spectacular Lake Michigan sunset may have helped seal the deal, but it was the combined and coordinated efforts of a community that landed the battery plant that will help rev up the economy in Holland. Resort has new executive chef [GRCC Alumni Chef Joseph George]

ACME — Joseph M. George is the new executive chef at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa.  He replaces Ted Cizma, who left this winter after three years at the job.  George started work Wednesday. He was the executive chef at LochenHeath golf club in Williamsburg from 2005 to 2008 and spent the last two years as executive chef at The Highlands golf club in Grand Rapids. […] “He is a guy who celebrates the craft of the chef,” said Randy Sahajdack, executive director of the Secchia Institute of Culinary Education at Grand Rapids Community College, where George held seminars for six years.  (More)

AGC Meeting Details: 4/13/10

The next Academic Governing Council (AGC) meeting will be Tuesday, April 13th at 3:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose room of the Student Community Center. During this meeting AGC representatives will

  • vote to approve three policies
  • learn about the Honors Program and proposes Program policies
  • receive an update regarding the Academic Service Learning Program
  • discuss updates to the AGC bylaws
  • conduct a year end evaluation of AGC

Math Awareness Contest: Prizes for Anyone who Enters

April is Math Awareness Month. This year’s national theme is Mathematics and Sports. In the spirit of celebrating this momentous holiday, the following is a logic problem to give your brain a little problem solving fun.   Any GRCC student or staff member may enter. Everyone who enters wins a prize! The entry form is attached and must be completed by April 19.
