SSPD Grants: May Funding Opportunity

The deadline for the submission of grant applications for the Support Staff Professional Development (SSPD) program is 4:30 p.m., May 21, 2010. The SSPD application packet and SSPD Guidelines are available in the GRCC Internal Grants area of the Grants Office website at www.grcc.edu/grants. Please note that applications must include a Supervisor’s Approval form, a budget form and budget documentation. Phone System Maintenance

The phone system will be taken down on Tuesday, May 18 at 11:00 PM to upgrade the backup power source for the phone system. Calls to and from the college will not go through during this upgrade which should take less than one hour.

New Student Orientation Begins for Fall

New student orientation has begun for students who will begin attending GRCC this fall.  Student Life offers 6 sessions per week (Tuesday – Thursday).  Students who have completed the admissions process get invited to sign up for a session, and then come to campus for a 4 hour orientation session that includes a meeting with an academic advisor, a tour, and a chance to signed up for fall classes.  These session run until the first week of August.  If you find any new students a bit turned around please direct them to the ATC Auditorium.

English was a required subject when Rolando Mancera was growing up in Mexico. “I used to skip class,” Mancera, 27, said over a glass of pink lemonade at Little Mexico Cafe in downtown Grand Rapids. “I didn’t think I would ever need English. I only remembered two or three phrases. I should have paid more attention.” […] Erika works for a toiletries manufacturer in Standale and is taking classes at Grand Rapids Community College to earn her general equivalency diploma. Softball: LCC splits with Grand Rapids CC

A second-inning throwing error led to the only run in Grand Rapids Community College’s 1-0 victory over Lansing Community College on Tuesday at Ranney Park. Samantha Schultz of Williamston went 2 for 3 with a double, Stephanie Manuel of St. Johns was also 2 for 3, and losing pitcher Sara Fisher of Williamston (16-6) struck out nine and gave up just six hits.  (More)

Funds raised Sunday will help cover expenses and future college costs not covered by the health insurance coverage of Klunder’s mother, Cheryl Klunder Powell. She told me her son — a 4.0-GPA student — has been unable to work or attend school at Grand Rapids Community College due to his treatments, which also led to revocation of a scholarship.  (More)

GRCC hikes tuition in Holland

Holland, MI – The Grand Rapids Community College Board of Trustees this week voted to raise tuition for the fall semester by about $15 more per class for resident students to about $75 per class for out-of-state students.  Holland-area students – who already pay more than double resident tuition for living outside of the community college’s tax base – will pay about $45 more per class this fall as a result of the changes.  (M0re)

Grand Rapids Community College baseball team splits regional tournament openers

GRCC’s Tyler Hall ready for next step, will continue baseball career at Central Michigan

Tyler Hall is just 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds, but he has all the right tools — speed, strength, heart and intelligence — to play NCAA Division I baseball. Hall, a 2008 Rockford High School graduate and now a sophomore at Grand Rapids Community College, has accepted a scholarship to continue his education and baseball career at Central Michigan University next season.  (More)
