English was a required subject when Rolando Mancera was growing up in Mexico. “I used to skip class,” Mancera, 27, said over a glass of pink lemonade at Little Mexico Cafe in downtown Grand Rapids. “I didn’t think I would ever need English. I only remembered two or three phrases. I should have paid more attention.” […] Erika works for a toiletries manufacturer in Standale and is taking classes at Grand Rapids Community College to earn her general equivalency diploma. Samantha Schultz of Williamston went 2 for 3 with a double, Stephanie Manuel of St. Johns was also 2 for 3, and losing pitcher Sara Fisher of Williamston (16-6) struck out nine and gave up just six hits. Funds raised Sunday will help cover expenses and future college costs not covered by the health insurance coverage of Klunder’s mother, Cheryl Klunder Powell. She told me her son — a 4.0-GPA student — has been unable to work or attend school at Grand Rapids Community College due to his treatments, which also led to revocation of a scholarship. (More)
GRCC hikes tuition in Holland

Holland, MI – The Grand Rapids Community College Board of Trustees this week voted to raise tuition for the fall semester by about $15 more per class for resident students to about $75 per class for out-of-state students. Holland-area students – who already pay more than double resident tuition for living outside of the community college’s tax base – will pay about $45 more per class this fall as a result of the changes. GRCC’s Tyler Hall ready for next step, will continue baseball career at Central Michigan

Tyler Hall is just 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds, but he has all the right tools — speed, strength, heart and intelligence — to play NCAA Division I baseball. Hall, a 2008 Rockford High School graduate and now a sophomore at Grand Rapids Community College, has accepted a scholarship to continue his education and baseball career at Central Michigan University next season.
