Faculty Member Brings Brainstorm Challenge for Community College Summit in Washington, DC

After presenting and attending the Community College National Center for Community Engagement (CCNCCE) conference in May, Associate Professor Mursalata Muhammad brought GRCC a challenge made by Hal Plotkin, Senior Advisor in the Office of the Under Secretary of Education (OUS).

Mr. Plotkin, who made the integration of service and workforce education a central point in his keynote address, asked conference attendees to return to their campuses and brainstorm ways that Service-Learning and Workforce Development can come together to help students attain a variety of educational goals. All suggestions had to be sent to Lyvier Conss, the executive director of CCNCCE, by June 11, 2010.

After meeting and e-mailing each other last week, Associate Dean Sullivan (Workforce Development), Mindy Firlan (Director ASL), and Mursalata Muhammad (English Department) sent ideas to CCNCCE by the June 11, 2010 deadline.

These ideas will help inform the agenda of the Community College Summit, under the direction of Jill Biden, to be held in September in Washington DC.

Raider Salute to Becky Bailey

This Raider Salute comes from Jan Benham in the Payroll/Benefits office:

“A huge “THANK YOU” to Becky Bailey, Coordinator of Payroll/Benefits, for the neverending patience, advice and support that she provides to the staff of GRCC!!!

Becky deals with an endless supply of “story problems” on a daily basis, and dealing with employee paychecks isn’t exactly an exact science.  She, however, “gets it,” and we are so fortunate that she does.  In addition, she should be recognized for the numerous hours spent working with potential retirees and helping them to become comfortable with their decisions.  Yes, she does it all very well …. and with a smile!  We appreciate you, my friend!”

Wayland well represented in annual John Bos all-star softball action
Steve Ungrey | The Grand Rapids Press, June 14, 2010 10:30 a.m.

The Hudsonville and Belding softball teams won’t be the only ones enjoying the chance to play Tuesday.  Other seniors in the area will get a chance to end their high school softball careers with one last game, this time for fun.  […] The games, which normally take place after the state finals, are being moved up by a week because Paula Maloley, Grand Rapids Community College‘s softball coach and Bos games coordinator, has foot surgery scheduled.  (More)
