Academic Support Tutor Training

On Wednesday, August 25, 130 new and returning tutors arrived on campus for Academic Support’s Semi-annual all Tutor Training.  New tutors experienced an inspiring talk from Master Tutor Trainer and past president of the Association of Tutoring Projessionals, Jim Valkenburg.  This was followed by a practical “Role of the Tutor” session from the Director of Developmental and Academic Support, Raju Hegde, and a campus-wide Scavenger Hunt.  All tutors enjoyed some fun lunch-time activities followed by an informative talk by Mary Beth Van Till on generational differences.

Move it or Lose it Winner: 8/31/10

The final drawing for the Move It Incentives was held today.  The winners for the August 16th drawing are Mike Faber ($25 Meijer gift card  and Sara Dorer ($25 GRCC Bookstore gift card ).  The winners for the August 30th drawing are Bruce Morrison ($25 Meijers gift card) and Frita Thayer ($25 MC Sports gift card).  Thanks to all who participated during this last year.

SSPD Grants: September Funding Opportunity

The deadline for the submission of grant applications for the Support Staff Professional Development (SSPD) program is 4:30 p.m., September 17, 2010. The SSPD application packet and SSPD Guidelines are available in the GRCC Internal Grants area of the Grants Office website at www.grcc.edu/grants. Please note that applications must include a Supervisor’s Approval form, a budget form and budget documentation. College Trail: McCollum scores first college goal

Last Friday, recipients of the “Teachers of Tomorrow” scholarships (created to help students majoring in education) gathered at the Applied Technology Center to be honored by the GRCC Foundation for their achievements and connect with the Education Department faculty they’ll be learning with.  GRCC President Dr. Steven Ender was on hand to congratulate the scholarship recipients, and GRCC professor Joe Hesse filled in as emcee.

Grand Rapids Community College seeks students for green job training

Grand Rapids Community College is preparing to launch its composite technician training class Sept. 13, but is having difficulty filling the 40 slots available for students, reports the Holland Sentinel.  The 80-hour, four-week class, which involves training on fiberglass and other laminate composite manufacturing, prepares students for entry-level sustainable energy manufacturing jobs that pay an average starting wage of $12.50 an hour.  (More)

GRAND RAPIDS — The mystique of electric-powered vehicles is a lot less mysterious for 23-year-old Tony Helmholdt. […] After high school, including a two-year dive into aviation repair at the Kent County Skill Center, Helmholdt mulled whether to pursue automotive technology at Grand Rapids Community College or Ferris State University. He opted for GRCC after visiting both programs. “GRCC had a better facility, and I liked the instructors better,” Helmholdt said.
