Learn the basics of conversational Spanish before you go on vacation! GRCC’s Workforce Training is offering Accelerated Spanish for Travelers.
This 12 hour workshop provides a basic introduction to the Spanish language and Hispanic culture with an emphasis on conversational skills. This is an excellent way to gain practical knowledge about the language and practice using common phrases and expressions in a conversational setting.
Topics include: basic pronunciation, common courtesy phrases, asking for and giving basic information, getting around by taxi, negotiating hotel and restaurant needs, going shopping, and communicating medical and emergency needs. You will also gain a basic understanding of various differences between U.S. and Latino cultures.

GRCC’s Keith St. Clair talk about experiences in Turkey set for Tuesday

MUSKEGON — Keith St. Clair, political scientist at Grand Rapids Community College and frequent speaker at international events, will share his insights on the nation of Turkey 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Stevenson Center for Higher Education, Room 1100 at Muskegon Community College, 221 Quarterline. The Rosa Parks Sculpture will be unveiled today at Rosa Parks Circle and the community is invited to attend the ceremony and program (which is scheduled to run 90 minutes beginning at Noon). After the ceremony, a free luncheon will be held at the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

Print Solutions has signed a new printer contract with Cannon. This contract will bring ease of printing, more privacy and much needed new printers to campuses for both students, faculty and staff. What does this mean for you? In the next few weeks we will be completing an assessment of your printing needs to determine which type of printer(s) you will be receiving. We will be creating a video and fact sheet explaining all of the new and amazing printing capabilities we will have with our new partnership.
One very exciting aspect of the new system is that multi-function machines will now “wait” to print your project until you are right at the machine – ANY machine – you are near. This means if you have a print job and you send it to the Multi-Function machine – all machines will patiently wait for you to enter your code or swipe your Raidercard and the job will be charged to your department account AND will be printed immediately from the machine you are using. No more going to one specific machine! We will also still have the printing / copy machines (non-multi functioning with scanning/etc.) installed as well.
Please know that we do understand many of you are waiting for new printers and new service on existing printers. We will be making the changeover soon and will be continuing service on machines you have while we assess and then make the switchover.

The Campus Wide Information System (CWIS), i.e. PeopleSoft, is being upgraded this academic year. Leaders of the Upgrade Team include Peggy Gorno, David Anderson, and Jody Graves. It is important that employees who regularly use the CWIS as part of their work pay attention to communications about the upgrade process. Please contact Peggy, David, or Jody if you have questions about the upgrade.
Upgrading the CWIS involves taking data from our current system and putting it in the new system and doing extensive testing. The new system will include many enhancements, such as:

Customers may be receiving email messages that allege to be from the U.S. Postal Service that contain fraudulent information about attempted or intercepted package delivery.
If opened, the messages instruct customers to click on a link to find out more about when they can expect delivery of their “package.” Simply delete the message without taking any further action.
The Postal Service Inspection Service is aware of the problem and working hard to resolve the issue and shut down the malicious program.

Yesterday, GRCC’s second annual Peace Studies Conference “Conflict Resolution: Challenges, Successes, and Failures of Supranational and International Organizations” kicked off in the Applied Technology Center. The conference runs September 27-29, 2010 and features speakers from Africa, the Middle East, Ireland, and the U.S., as well as local and GRCC experts.
