GRCC Crocheters/Knitters Group Needs Help

GRCC has an unofficial group of crocheters/knitters that gather to make items for those in need. They would like to thank everyone for their donations of yarn over the past year, but now they’re in need of crocheters and knitters. Last year the group donated over 50 scarves, lapghans, and slippers to the Veterans Home of Grand Rapids. Their goal for next year (October 2011) is to do the same only to donate to our students: mittens, scarves, hats.

The group meets on the last Friday of the month at Noon. Please let Tracy Payne (tpayne@grcc.edu) know if you’d like to be a part of this.

Video: Preston Reed of GRCC International Guitar Series

GRCC’s annual International Guitar Series kicks off with fingerstyle acoustic guitarist Preston Reed on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in the GRCC Recital Hall on 142 Ransom Street (Room 200).

Most great guitarists would be grateful to create a legacy of classic recordings, stand-out performances and blistering technique, but US-born Preston Reed has gone much further by inventing an entirely new way of playing the guitar. His influence is crucial for a new generation of guitarists including Kaki King and Andy McKee, both of whom play in the style developed by Reed back in the mid-1980s.

Reed fuses chord-based grooves, soaring melodic runs and polyrhythmic percussion with his breathtaking two-handed style.

The power and depth of Reed’s original compositions are as unique as his execution, as blues, rock, funk and jazz meet, interlock and attack to create a sonic brew quite unlike anything you’ve heard before.

Each piece is a symphonic tidal wave, yet Reed needs only one guitar and ten fingers to unleash it onto audiences across the planet.
