Artprize Panel Discussion 10/5/10

The college will host an Artprize Panel Discussion on Oct 5, at 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Spectrum Theater and will be followed by coffee and cookies in the lobby.  All Visual Arts classes are invited as well as all employees, students and the community.  The panelists who will speak are:

Accelerated Spanish for Travelers

Learn the basics of conversational Spanish before you go on vacation! GRCC’s Workforce Training is offering Accelerated Spanish for Travelers.

This 12 hour workshop provides a basic introduction to the Spanish language and Hispanic culture with an emphasis on conversational skills. This is an excellent way to gain practical knowledge about the language and practice using common phrases and expressions in a conversational setting.

Topics include: basic pronunciation, common courtesy phrases, asking for and giving basic information, getting around by taxi, negotiating hotel and restaurant needs, going shopping, and communicating medical and emergency needs. You will also gain a basic understanding of various differences between U.S. and Latino cultures.

GRCC’s Keith St. Clair talk about experiences in Turkey set for Tuesday

MUSKEGON — Keith St. Clair, political scientist at Grand Rapids Community College and frequent speaker at international events, will share his insights on the nation of Turkey 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Stevenson Center for Higher Education, Room 1100 at Muskegon Community College, 221 Quarterline. St. Clair spent more than a month in Turkey and will use his photos to share his impressions and thoughts about the country.  (More)

Rosa Parks Sculpture Unveiling Today (9/30/10)

The Rosa Parks Sculpture will be unveiled today at Rosa Parks Circle and the community is invited to attend the ceremony and program (which is scheduled to run 90 minutes beginning at Noon).  After the ceremony, a free luncheon will be held at the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

Organizers advise arriving no later than 11:45 a.m.   In the event of rain, the unveiling will be held inside the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

Alternative energy – what is it an alternative to? Understanding the existing energy infrastructure is essential for plotting the path to a sustainable energy future. Learn where our energy comes from now, how it’s converted and distributed, and the back story of the issues we see in the headlines. GRCC Instructor, Sara Yob, will tell you more about:

  • Electric power generation, its fuels, the grid and current issues
  • What’s driving energy use and demand
  • Environmental cost (fossil fuels/carbon issue) for today’s power generation
  • Economic argument and current incentives for energy efficiency and renewable
  • Issues and opportunities in changeover to electric transportation
