Few institutions are as critical to the success of the state as community colleges. The cost of four-year universities is rising at rates many families can’t afford, especially in Michigan’s prolonged economic crisis. That crisis has created hundreds of thousands of people who need to be retrained for new jobs, an important task for community colleges.  (More)

Grand Rapids school board candidate says lack of public forums does a ‘disservice’ to community and candidates

GRAND RAPIDS — One of the eight candidates running for the Grand Rapids school board is asking local organizations that have demonstrated a concern about public eduction to host public forums before the May 3 election. […] “This one limited opportunity to assess and compare qualifications of the candidates really does a disservice to those running and especially to the citizens who want to make an informed decision,” said candidate Raynard Ross, director of Grand Rapids Community College’s Upward Bound program, a pre-college program for low-income and potential first generation students.  (More)
