What’s on the ballot? Local school elections and several local proposals. […] The Grand Rapids Community College ballot has four candidates seeking two open seats on the board of trustees. Incumbents Michael Stearns and Janice Maggini are not seeking re-election. Secchia Institute for Culinary Education Team Wins 2011 Chefs Challenge

The team from Secchia Institute for Culinary Education at Grand Rapids Community College was named winner of the 2011 Chefs Challenge during an “Iron Chef” inspired competition – edging out a team from The Art Institute of Michigan of Novi. The competition was held at Boyne Mountain Resort on Saturday, April 30, with Emmy Award winning chef and award-winning cookbook author Eric Villegas serving as master of ceremonies.  (More)

A team from GRCC’s Secchia Institute for Culinary Education won the 2011 Chefs Challenge. SSPD Grants: May Funding Opportunity

The deadline for the submission of grant applications for the Support Staff Professional Development (SSPD) program is 4:30 p.m., May 20, 2011. The SSPD application packet and SSPD Guidelines are available in the Professional Development Grants section of the Grants Office website here. Please note that applications must include a Supervisor’s Approval form, a budget form and budget documentation. Congratulations to Music Transfer Students

Congratulations to the following music students for earning their associate’s degree from GRCC and transferring to four-year institutions to complete their music education. Members from the Communications department were invited to join an informal discussion with these students recently and were able to snap a few shots of them in action. Among the future plans for this group are: a summer music program in Austria; summer at Aria international academy in Massachusetts; and preparation for fall classes at Western Michigan and Michigan State universities.

National Fitness Day – Monday 5/16/11

Want to get fit but don’t know how to get started? Put the above date on your calendar and stop by the terrace off the Raider Grill (in case of rain, things will be moved into the Raider Grill). The WE Team is hosting this event to give employees and students the chance to see how fun and easy it can be to be fit.

Here’s the schedule for the day:

11-11:30 a.m. Zumba
11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Line Dancing
12:30-1 p.m. Resistance Mashup
1:15-1:45 p.m. Stretch & Flex

There will be door prizes drawn for those who participate.

Throughout this time, Chef Nancy, from Creative Dining, will also show you how to make smoothies featuring yogurt as well as seasonal fruits. Yes, you’ll be able to taste them and copies of the recipes will be available.  The WE team looks forward to seeing you there.
