International Study Opportunities for Faculty From the Midwest Institute

The Midwest Institute will receive $30,000 funding thru co-sponsorships from nine international centers (Title VI program, U.S.
Dept. of Education) to organize the 2011 summer workshops.

Specifically, the 2011 workshops will be:

* Africa (July 25-29, 2011) and/or Latin America (July 25-29, 2011)
* Global Values, Responsibility and Leadership (August 1-5, 2011)
* Global Interactions and Exchanges (August 8-12, 2011)

The workshops will be offered in Kalamazoo for the purpose of providing information & resources to faculty for the development of curriculum
modules on various aspects or issues relating to one of the weekly workshops.

For each workshop, 15 faculty will be selected on a “FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVE” basis from members in the Midwest Institute consortium.

Each faculty will receive a $1,000 stipend for his/her participation and the development of a curriculum module to be infused into a least
one course that he/she is teaching.

State Board of Education plans “listening and discussion” tour stop in Grand Rapids

The state Board of Education is planning a “listening and discussion” forum in Grand Rapids on May 23 to hear about the “current education conditions, reforms, and the future direction of education in Michigan.” The event is planned for 4-7 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Community College’s DeVos Campus, 415 Fulton Street.  (More)

Farmers Insurance welcomed Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson to their Caledonia campus on Thursday, May 12th, 2011 to receive a recognition award from the State of Michigan for Outstanding Performance in Motorcycle Safety. […] For the past decade, Farmers has partnered with the Department of State Motorcycle Safety Program and Grand Rapids Community College to provide parking lots for motorcycle ranges, buildings for classrooms, storage space and other resources to conduct motorcycle safety courses.   (More)
