Grand Rapids golfer Dennis Burns, who spent years teaching golf with Tiger Woods Foundation, dies at age 50

Dennis Burns didn’t take up golf until he had already earned a college football scholarship for his standout play at Creston High School. Mr. Burns excelled in golf, too, and became the only African-American member of the Michigan PGA. Mr. Burns died Wednesday in Virginia of cancer at the home of his brother. He was recently treated at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Mr. Burns, who was diagnosed with cancer last March, was 50. (More)

In 2009, Kerr, 58, was laid off from her position in corporate communications and marketing at Steelcase, a company with whom she’d been employed since 1985, when the office furniture giant acquired another local furniture company where she’d been working through college. GRAND RAPIDS – Jeff Cousins is having a hard time adjusting to not seeing his twin daughters, Katelyn and Kristina, together on the basketball court. It was a pleasurable sight that had been commonplace for more than a decade for Jeff and his wife, Patti. Instead, the sisters, best friends and former three-sport standouts at Forest Hills Central High School, are playing basketball at separate colleges this winter. Allendale — Two national speakers will highlight Grand Valley State University’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Events will extend beyond the national holiday and run the week of Jan. 16-21. Bakari Kitwana, journalist and author, will kick off programming Jan. 16, with a presentation, “The King Legacy and the Next Generation,” at 12:30 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center on the Allendale Campus. ALLEGAN — The city of Allegan has banned tobacco use in Jaycee Park and part of Hanson Park. “Both of those particular parks have playground equipment, so these are specific areas for smaller children,” City Manager-Clerk Robert Hillard said of the reason for the tobacco ban. […] Cigarette butts litter the ground outside the Grand Rapids Public Library, across the street from Grand Rapids Community College, where smoking is not permitted. (More)

Fenn Valley Vineyards in Fennville will host its 13th annual Chili Cook-Off and Wine Lover’s Potluck. Chili submissions will be in multiple categories: four legs (beef and pork), two legs (fowl), vegetarian (non-meat) and exotic (seafood or wild game, including venison).
