Honors and Experiential Learning Students Habitat for Humanity

On Wednesday, March 7, GRCC Honors students and Department of Experiential Learning staff volunteered at Habitat for Humanity of Kent County. Volunteers put the finishing touches of paint on a nearby home that will by handed over to its new home owners in the coming weeks. Thanks students and staff for taking time out of your Spring Break to support our community partner.

Pathways to Prosperity at GRCC

Everyone knows someone who is unemployed or underemployed who could benefit from GRCC’s Pathway to Prosperity program. This program provides an opportunity for FREE training in Green Jobs along with so much more.

  • Each participant is assigned a Career Coach to walk beside them as they progress from education to employment.
  • They are also provided assessments and support services to encourage success.

March is the last month we will be recruiting new participants, so please encourage any interested individuals to contact 234-3400 for the upcoming schedule of Awareness Sessions.

Author James Preller at Grand Rapids Public Library Tonight 3/12/12

Students in the Honors English Digital Literacy course want you and readers of the Rapidian to know that on Monday, the Grand Rapids Public Library hosts James Preller, the author of this years selected read for the One Book, One City for Kids: “Along Came a Spider.”

The celebration of literacy begins at 6:30 on 3/12/12 at the GRPL’s main branch. For more information read the students’ article here.

Beyond Victimization: The Beauty Myth Revisited

Author of seven books, including the New York Times best-seller The Beauty Myth, Naomi Wolf focuses on gender equality, pervasive inequities in society and politics, the defense of liberty in America and internationally, and body image. She is the cofounder of the Woodhull Institute for Ethical Leadership, which teaches ethics and empowerment to young women leaders.

In Give Me Liberty: A Handbook for American Revolutionaries, Wolf argues that breathtaking changes take place when ordinary citizens engage in the democratic system the way the founders intended, through civic engagement.
