This month, GRCC’s Center for Teaching Excellence brings adjunct faculty three topics originally offered at the January 2012 Learning Day for GRCC full-time faculty. This is your opportunity to learn more about Disability Services, Early Alert, and Academic Service Learning. Each workshop will be offered twice, so all participants may choose two topics. While this event is targeted to adjunct faculty at GRCC, it is open to full or part-time faculty members from any institution of Higher Learning.

Disability 101
Presenter: Karen Murphy, B.S., Professional Academic Advisor, Occupational Support and Disability Services
Outcomes:
- Feel better equipped and more comfortable as they work with students with disabilities in a classroom setting
- Know their obligations under the ADA and civil law
- Be able to identify and understand the use of accommodations in an academic setting Gain an awareness of the role of the GRCC Disability Support Services Office
- Be able to appropriately direct a student with disabilities to help them meet their needs or requests
Maximizing Early Alert for Student Success and Retention
Presenter: Lynnae Selberg, M.A., L.P.C., L.S.W., Program Director, Counseling and Career Center
Outcomes:
- Learn how to raise flags and determine which is the optimal flag for their situation Understand their role in the early alert process and expectations of the system
- Be able to identify and use the new features and enhancements made to the system
Connecting Students with Our Community
Presenters: Academic Service Learning Faculty Scholars Sandra Andrews, Ph.D., R.D.; Leigh Kleinert, M.H.S.; and Sherry Knoppers, Ph.D., M.S.N., R.N.
Outcomes:
- Become familiar with experiential learning pedagogy
- Identify course objectives that could be met through community engagement
- Explore community agencies that could serve as potential partners in meeting course objectives
