At Monday’s Board of Trustees Meeting, Lieutenant Scott Merlo was sworn in as a member of GRCC’s Police Department.
Lieutenant Scott Merlo has been a law enforcement officer since 1990. Prior to coming to GRCC, he was an Executive Lieutenant at the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. At KDPS, Lieutenant Merlo faithfully served as a Public Safety Officer, Field Training Officer, Detective, Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, shift Lieutenant, and Executive Lieutenant of both the Criminal Investigations Division and the Operations Division. He was also the Commander of the Honor Guard. After 22 years of service at KDPS, Lieutenant Merlo retired and came to work at GRCC PD.
Lieutenant Merlo received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and political science from Western Michigan University.
Welcome, Mason Alan Reed! Born on Monday, April 16th to Jeremy and Mary Reed (College Advancement) at 4:21pm at 34 weeks. He was 4 pounds, 14 ounces, and 16 1/2 inches long. Born a little early but doing very well and hope to be able to take him home from hospital in a few weeks.
Long-time GRCC Professor and Program Director in the Radiologic Technology Department John Godisak passed away recently. From his obituary:
John Frank Godisak, age 65, of Traverse City, MI passed away April 16, 2012. He leaves behind his wife, Linda (Lyn) Godisak; two daughters and a son, Natasha (Jeff) Vander Velde, grandchildren, Roman, EJ and Madeline Vander Velde of Belmont, MI, Jonathan (Tina) Godisak, grandchild, Brooklyn Godisak of Rico, CO, Mandi Phillips, grandchildren, Austin and Kaylee Phillips of Wyoming, MI Also one stepdaughter and two stepsons. The Radiologic Technology Department is having a memorial service Friday (April 20) in memory of John Godisak at Art and Bev’s from 3-6pm – details here.
The 2012 Student Employee of the Year is Ashley Shaub from the English Department. Her supervisor, Gail Brown, wrote in her nomination letter that “Ashley presents herself professionally and always has a pleasant attitude. Her phone etiquette is exceptional, and a comfortable sense of humor puts everyone at ease. She possesses a broad range of specific knowledge about how the department functions and knows most of our 130 faculty members and provides top notch assistance to them all!” Congratulations Ashley!

Congratulations to the Raider Golf Team as they recently won the GRCC Invite featuring ten teams from the MCCAA Western and Eastern conferences. Leading the way for the Raiders was Derek Roe a sophomore from Portland, who was the tournament medalist winning in a sudden death playoff.
Nathan Hamilton (IT Enterprise Applications) presented at the Inspire 2012 Conference in Miami Beach, FL on Monday, April 15th. His session was titled “ImageNow in Financial Aid”. The presentation focused on how ImageNow can automatically update student checklists in PeopleSoft and notify staff when a student file is ready to be reviewed for verification. He also shared ways to streamline financial aid processes and improve workflow efficiencies within departments.
