Disability Support Services Wraps Up National Disability Awareness Month

Here is the opportunity that you have all been waiting for to test your knowledge!  Feel free to use the information that has been presented in GRCC Today each Monday throughout the month of October.

Answer the questions to the Awareness Quiz located on the Disability Support Services website at www.grcc.edu/disability and email to disability@grcc.edu.  All entries with correct answers will be entered into a drawing for a gift certificate to Art and Bevs, courtesy of the Secchia Institute for Culinary Education.  The deadline to submit is November 5, 2012.  Good luck!

Winners Of GRCC’s Third Idea Pitch Competition

Grand Rapids Community College is proud to present the winners of GRCC’s Third Idea Pitch Competition, held Monday, October 29, 2012. Idea Pitch gives our students and future entrepreneurs the opportunity to pitch a well-planned idea to a panel of distinguished judges with passion and in an exciting and professional manner.

First place winner Jeffrey Noel received $800 for his “BookHippie” idea, and Damion Harden earned the $300 award for second place with his “Glow n Walk” concept. Third Place and a $100 award went to Jennifer Vanderploeg for her “ArtMarket” pitch.

The first round of Idea Pitch was open to any GRCC student in any area of study. Noel and Harden emerged from the finalists with their awards and the right to advance to the regional level, where the prizes include $1500 1st place, $1000 2nd place, and two 3rd place prizes of $500 each. The Regional Idea Pitch Competition will be held this year at Aquinas College on Wednesday, November 7, 2012.

The three judges for this year’s competition included: Randy Walter, Chief Engineer – GE Aviation, Tony Bowie, Chief Technologist – GE Aviation, and our very own GRCC alum Justin Williams, CEO & Owner – Affordable Limousine & Party Bus LLC and Progressive Properties.

Felix Pereiro, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Chairman of the Idea Pitch Competition states, “It is our goal at Grand Rapids Community College to help people in our community turn their dreams into reality. It is our goal to explore the possibilities of reimagining a better world. It is our goal to help nurture that creative spirit in every human being. All great businesses start with an idea!”

Diversity Lecture Series Presents Douglas Rushkoff

Douglas Rushkoff – author, media theorist and lecturer – will present “Digital Nation” November 13, 2012, in the next Diversity Lecture.

Douglas Rushkoff, Ph.D. is a graphic novelist and globally recognized media and technology theorist specializing in new media and internet culture. He originated several ideas ranging from “viral media” to “social currency” with insight on how interactive communications affect our society as we create, share, and influence each other’s values.  Rushkoff is a CNN commentator, author of 12 books, including the Gen-X Reader, Screenagers, Life Inc.: How Corporatism Conquered the World, and How We Can Take It Back. He is best known for his association with the early cyberpunk culture, and his advocacy of open source solutions to social problems.
