Conference Encourages Girls to Seek Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering & Math

More than 200 5th to 8th grade girls from area West Michigan schools will participate in the hands-on, experiential Science + Technology + Engineering + Math (STEM) Girl Genius Conference Saturday, November 3, 2012.  The day-long, interactive conference will begin with a welcome by GRCC Provost Dr. Gilda Gely.  The event is designed to encourage young women to seek a career in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.  Participants will have the opportunity to engage with key women leaders in the STEM fields throughout the day, including a keynote address on Possibility Thinking by Dr. Julie Davis Turner, Ph.D. Assistant Dean at the Van Andel Institute Graduate School.

STEM is a collaborative effort by Fifth Third Bank, Grand Rapids Community College, Kettering University and Catholic Central and West Catholic High Schools.

Thanksgiving Holiday

The College will be closed for Thanksgiving Break from Wednesday, November 21 through Friday, November 23.  Employees eligible for holiday pay, please remember to record holiday pay on your timesheet.  Reminder: Payday will be on Wednesday, November 21 even though the College is closed.

Dr. Hendershot Contributes To Book

Social Science professor Dr. Robert Hendershot has been selected to collaborate in the writing of a book – Anglo-American  Relations: Contemporary Perspectives – to be published on November 29, 2012. Dr. Hendershot was approached by authors Alan Dobson and Steve Marsh, and the publishers at Routledge Press, to write a chapter pertaining to the often controversial examination of contemporary Anglo-American relations.

“This is a major accomplishment not just for Dr. Hendershot, but for all of GRCC,” said Mike Light, head of the college’s Social Sciences Department.  “We’re looking forward to the book’s publication.”

Dr. Hendershot, an Associate Professor of History, has other published works on Anglo-American relations, including Family Spats: Perception, Illusion, and Sentimentality in the Anglo-American Special Relationship (2008).

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The Rapid shattered its own ridership record during the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, with 11.9 million rides registered…The remaining six percent of rides were given under The Rapid’s contracted services with Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids Community College and the DASH service.
