Looking for solutions to the violence in Grand Rapids

In 2012, Grand Rapids saw an outburst of violent crime, including nine homicides in which all of the victims died from gunshot wounds.

This week, two community groups called Urban League and Network 180 are hosting a series of meetings to inform the public about possible solutions and to begin a discussion about the future of violence in the Grand Rapids community.

Raynard Ross is a resident of Grand Rapids and works with Upward Bound at Grand Rapids Community College. Ross also serves on a panel to address the issue of violence within the Grand Rapids community.

According to Ross, street violence has reached a level of “borderline madness.”

Grand Rapids Community College Foundation names Donald MacKenzie executive director

The Grand Rapids Community College Foundation has found a new leader.

GRCC announced that Donald MacKenzie, a longtime West Michigan resident with both philanthropic and business experience, has been named the new associate vice president for advancement and executive director of the GRCC Foundation.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ 2013 cast member D.L. Hughley will be in Grand Rapids for LaughFest

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Dancing with the Stars welcomes comedian D.L. Hughley, along with Wynonna Judd, Jacoby Jones, Kellie Pickler, Andy Dick and Dorothy Hamill for the next season’s cast.

… Hughley, along with comedians Bruce Bruce, Finesse Mitchell and Gary Owen, will be at the Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse at Grand Rapids Community College on March 8 during the community wide festival of laughter.

Rockford junior verbally commits to play Division 1 baseball

ROCKFORD — Rockford junior baseball standout Matt Dileo has long found that there is something special about playing the catcher position.

… Dileo is one of four Rams on this years squad who have already made collegiate commitments. Seniors Steven Powell and Tim Redder will be playing for Grand Rapids Community College next year, while Kory Young has verbally committed to Michigan State University.

This Birthday in Buffalo Sports History: Eddie Brown

(Born on February 27, 1969) — Consider yourself one of the all-time Buffalo sports experts if this name rings any sort of bell. The obvious hint is that he played football, but not the kind of football you’re considering.

Brown played high school football at Muskegon High (Mich.), where he won a state championship. Then it was on to Grand Rapids Community College and Michigan State. Brown started as wide receiver in 1989 and as a defensive back in 1990.
