Yesterday the GRCC Criminal Justice Department hosted an event to discuss the impact, consequences, and outcomes of drinking and driving. Over 130 GRCC Criminal Justice Students, staff and community members experienced a simulated panel, which is commonly used for court sentencing and probationers involved in alcohol related offenses. The session had a dual effect – education on the process and the realities of drunk driving.

New Records Management Policy
Highlights for the Records Management Policy:
- New Policy
- A records retention and destruction schedule is being developed and we hope to have State approval, as required by law, by July 1, 2013.
- This policy will make employees aware of the need to systematically retain and destroy college records and their individual responsibilities as custodians of college records.

Should community colleges drop the word ‘community’ from their name?

GRAND RAPIDS, MI –Does “community” in a community college name have negative connotations?
With the passage of legislation allowing community colleges to grant four-year degrees in some areas, at least one school in Michigan — Jackson Community College — is considering dropping the word community from its name.
… But it’s not a strategy administrators at Grand Rapids Community College are considering, said college spokeswoman Kathy Mullins.
“It’s not a conversation we’re planning on having,” Mullins said.
Grand Rapids Film Festival announces venue details, free outdoor movie screening

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Grand Rapids Film Festival organizers have announced a few more details about the recently revamped five-day event, which will take place in downtown Grand Rapids on May 15-19, 2013.
… Movies will be shown at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts and Grand Valley State University’s downtown campus. Kendall College of Art and Design and the Compass College of Cinematic Arts will host workshops. The Producer’s Brunch will take place at Grand Rapids Community College on May 17.
Season ends for GRCC men’s basketball team after second straight loss in national tournament

DANVILLE, Ill. — The Grand Rapids Community College men’s basketball team entered the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament intending to make a deep run.
Instead, the Raiders are headed home after suffering their second straight loss.
