Muskegon Community College update: Golfer earns all-conference honors

MUSKEGON, MI — The Muskegon Community College golf team finished in second place in the Western Conference tournament after Monday’s final round in Plymouth, Ind.

Projects that educated pregnant teens about oral hygiene, promoted a healthy lifestyle to children, and improved access to The Collegiate student newspaper were named winners of Grand Rapids Community College’s 2013 Armen Awards.

It’s been a busy eight months for everyone! The architects, contractors and our own GRCC Facilities crew have literally rebuilt the infrastructure in College Park Plaza from the inside out! An enormous amount of effort, coordination and cooperation was required to complete this task, and that started with those departments that vacated the building on short notice.
CPP received new:
• heating & ventilation systems
• lighting for improved light quality and energy efficiency
• ceilings
• network wiring, switches and wireless routers
• fire suppression system
• fixtures and china in restroom facilities
• elevators
The Math Department and staff with the Foundation and College Advancement have moved back in, and English is moving in this week. The improvements to this building make College Park Plaza GRCC’s second LEED-certified facility!

Congratulations to the 9th ranked GRCC Golf Team as they won their 5th consecutive Western Conference Championship the past four days. They outdistanced second place Muskegon CC by sixty strokes. Also congratulations to Kory Roberts who was the individual medalist for the tournament. This is Kory’s third tournament win this spring. Making All-Conference for the Raiders were Kory Roberts, Jared Multer, Jake Siegel, David Thompson, Cody Shoemaker, and Max Lundy. The Raiders claimed six of the top ten positions. The team travels to Port Huron this weekend to play in the MCCAA State Tournament.
On Saturday, April 27, 2013, the GRCC Older Learner Center Team took First Place in the Senior Odyssey of Michigan Community Competition. What is Senior Odyssey? Senior Odyssey is the same as Odyssey of the Mind, the international program for students in kindergarten through college. Participants are encouraged to think creatively and outside the box. In Senior Odyssey, participants find opportunities to use their knowledge and life experiences in ways that give them a sense of purpose and pride. They engage in creative activities that promote cognitive vitality and healthy aging. As the winner of this competition, the GRCC Older Learner Center Team has been invited to showcase their performance at the May 25, 2013, Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Michigan State University. Congratulations to Coach Jean Schmuker, and team members: Jackie Cromwell, Jane Greenman, Brady Jones, Joanne Jones, Freda Lehnen, Roger Meyer, and Barb Wingard!

In the ISO 9001:2008 Internal Auditor Training course, you’ll learn how to conduct effective and efficient internal audits. Focus will be given to the requirements of the ISO 9001:2008 standard and how to audit to ensure compliance in your organization. This class is a mixture of teaching the requirements within the standard and a practical exercise that will give actual auditing experience.

The ISO 14001 Overview course provides a basic understanding of the ISO 14001 Standard. It includes the concept, development, publication, and evolution of the standard. You will be introduced to each of the ISO 14001 requirements and what is involved in the development of a business system that meets the requirements. You will also learn what to expect during the development and implementation process.
This course runs 8 a.m. to noon June 28, 2013, and costs $295. To register, click here.
This travel award is for fun, enjoyment, and relaxation. It is not intended to supplement any faculty, staff or administrator’s professional development travel funds. A cash award of up to $400 will be given to any full or part-time GRCC employee who completes the following requirements and has his or her essay judged the best to fulfill the employee’s intention to relax, enjoy and have fun.
Requirements:
1. Submit an essay (500 words or less) telling how you intend to use thecash award for fun, enjoyment, relaxation. The more unusual, the better!
2. Essays will not be judged on spelling, writing style, organization, usage or grammar.
3. Essays may be hand-written or typed. Do not put your name on the essay. Attach to the essay a sealed envelope containing your name and phone number. Write the last four numbers of your social security number in the upper right hand corner of the first page of the essay and on the outside of the envelope. Send the essay and envelope to Mary Reed, Grand Rapids Community College Foundation Office. All essays must be received by Friday, May 3, 2013.
4. All award winners will be notified by May 10, 2013.
