Two Middleville men die in head-on crash / 5-30-13

Thornapple Kellogg students and Middleville residents gathered Monday night at TK’s Bob White stadium to remember two 2008 TKHS graduates killed in a traffic accident Saturday night.

Ryan Boyd, 23, and Matthew Dundas, 24, both of Middleville, were killed in the crash on M-37 south of 100th Street in southern Kent County at about 6:20 p.m.

… Boyd was employed as a welder at Bradford White in Middleville. Dundas attended Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Valley State University where he was studying exercise science. He was working an internship at Bradford White as a lab technician.

GRCC Older Learner Center team takes top prize in Senior Odyssey of the Mind competition

Kids from kindergarten through college met at Michigan State for the Odyssey of the Mind world finals last week and with them celebrating victory were students at Grand Rapids Community College’s Older Learner Center.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Close to two dozen Grand Rapids Public Schools students put their creative skills to the test recently in an effort to have their art projects recognized at ArtPrize this fall.

… The entries — all of which focus on themes related to sustainable energy — will be judged by officials from Kendall College of Art and Design, Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Valley State University. The top winner is to receive a $1,000 scholarship, and have his or her work displayed on the wall of the Consumer’s electric substation at Fulton Street and Monroe Avenue.

Chef Series at Farmers Market

This Saturday, Chef Micky Johnson from Salt & Pepper Grill and Pub will share his tips for planning the perfect picnic menu as part of the weekly Holland Farmers Market Chef Series. Beginning at 10 a.m., Johnson will share his ideas for making an unforgettable four-course picnic meal using fresh produce and other ingredients from the market.

Johnson’s career as a chef began when he was just 16 years old and working at the Queen’s Inn Restaurant. He soon realized that he had a passion for food and the hospitality industry and went on to pursue a hospitality degree from Grand Rapids Community College for Culinary Arts, along with a business degree from Davenport University. Johnson has cooked at a number of popular West Michigan restaurants including Chaps, Everyday People Cafe and Phil’s Bar and Grille. Johnson held his first head chef position at Till Midnight. He believes that food should be simple and that letting the true flavors shine through the dish should please the guests you are serving.

Rockford 4-Hers raise money for nationwide disaster victims

As another disaster strikes the nation, two 4-Hers model the 4-HMichigan 4-H’ers pledge by lending their hands to larger service for not just their community and state but nationwide.

… DeGelder will begin her senior year at Rockford High School this fall. (Dylan) Rodriguez attends Grand Rapids Community College. Both 4-Hers intend to attend Michigan State University to study animal science through the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Grand Rapids Creston two-sport star saved the ‘best for last’

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — As Grand Rapids Creston High School closes its doors at the end of the school year, Mallory Robinson, one of its finest tennis players and an outstanding student, earned high praise from her coach.

… Robinson was accepted to the University of Michigan, but she has decided to attend Grand Rapids Community College, where she hopes to play both sports and transfer to Cornell University to study neuropsychology and behavioral neuroscience.

 

30th Annual Michael Flanagan Memorial Golf Outing

Thanks to all of our supporters — faculty, staff, vendors and donors — as our preliminary results show GRCC will add over $20,000 to the GRCC Foundation Unrestricted Scholarship Fund. Despite the wind, rain and chilly temperatures on May 23, over 135 golfers played in the 30th Annual Michael Flanagan Golf Outing. GRCC’s students reap the benefits of your generosity – we thank you. ESP team seeks help for Relay for Life

A message from Staci Dever:

Good morning everyone! I am excited to report that the GRCC ESP Team for the Relay for Life has raised just over $780 so far. We are at 15% of our goal of $5,000. I would like to ask everyone to make a big push these next two weeks and aim to have raised 50% of our goals (or $2,500) before June 13th.

There are many ways you can help! I have pledge sheets you can use to ask family and friend to donate. Completing 1 pledge sheet will equal $100! We also have footprints for sale that you can redeem at our booth on the 14th or 15th for a free goodie!

If you cannot help financially, we are still looking for a few things to borrow for our booth.

Tassell M-TEC employees help Kids Food Basket

The Tassell M-TEC employees collected and donated snack items to the Kids Food Basket during the month of May. We set a goal of collecting 150 individual items, and far surpassed our goal with an end result of almost 1,000 individual items! These included pudding cups, fruit cups, juice boxes, Cherios, and snack bags.

Elly Bainbridge, Elleena Chrzan, Cheryl Cole, Anny Cuculista, Kristen Seevers, and Mandy Vanderhill volunteered during the noon hour packing meals for Kent County children in need at Kids Food Basket on May 30, 2013.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this donation and made progress toward ending child hunger in Kent County!

Students to talk about trip to France

Students traveled to parts of France as part of the HU 293 French Culture and Civilization course that professor Hillery Haney taught for the first Summer session.

Opportunity to learn strategies that may assist our Student Veterans

On Tuesday, June 11, the Veteran’s Benefits Office, along with Student Records, is hosting a webinar presented by HigherEd Hero of Pennsylvania.  Entitled, “Veterans on Campus: Support & Service Strategies to Retain Student Vets,” the webinar seeks to offer and discuss strategies that “provide returning student veterans with campus-wide support and services” in an effort to further the student veteran experience and ensure their success.

With this goal in mind, the presenter—Dr. Jose E. Coll, Director of Veteran Student Services at Saint Leo University—will examine and discuss techniques relating to

• Understanding the military student culture
• Successful veteran reintegration into college life
• Veteran-centered academic advising
• Retention and academic success for vets
• Meeting academic and social challenges of vets in the classroom

Center for Intellectual Property closes

The provost at the University of Maryland recently announced her decision to close the Center for Intellectual Property (CIP). During the last two years, librarians facilitated GRCC’s institutional member, with access to webinars and Community Conversations on copyright and other intellectual property issues.

The CIP is not to be confused with the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) with which the College holds an Annual Academic License.

Nan Schichtel re-elected to Grand Rapids Historical Society board

Nan Schichtel, Information Literacy & Outreach Librarian, was re-elected to a three year term as trustee of the Grand Rapids Historical Society. She was also elected Secretary at the May 28, 2013, meeting.

ACT/SAT writing workshop scheduled for June 3, 2013

GRCC’s ACT/SAT writing workshop is designed to help students understand the expectations for taking the essay portions of the ACT and SAT exams. The workshop highlights eight characteristics that graders of the exams are looking for and teaches students strategies for meeting the expectations.

The goal of the workshop is to help students understand the testing expectations and situation in order to give them the confidence to meet this challenge. Students are encouraged to ask questions and to use the skills of the workshop as they practice independently.

Students will:

• analyze sample essays.
• learn to use the prompts to formulate their answers.
• practice writing thesis statements and introductions.
• learn about how to incorporate support in essays.
• write a practice essay.
• receive a critique of their writing with recommendations.

The workshop will be held 6-9 p.m. June 3, 2013, and costs $42. You have to be 14 or older to attend the workshops. To register, click here.

Obituaries today: Funeral services Friday for Matthew Dundas, 24, and Ryan Boyd, 23

Matthew Ryan Dundas, 24, liked athletics and being physically fit, and he was studying exercise science at Grand Valley State University.

Ryan M. Boyd, 23, was a welder and Steeler fan, who was known for his laughter and being silly.

The two Middleville men died Saturday, May 25, 2013, in a car accident on M-37.

… Dundas was a Thornapple Kellogg High School graduate who attended GRCC and GVSU. At 14, he worked at the Caledonia Sportsman Club, pulling clays. He was working as a lab technician in an internship at Bradford White. He is remembered as a great kid.

Festival of the Arts’ Regional Art Exhibition opens Friday in Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Festival of Arts Regional Art Exhibition opens Friday, one week ahead of Festival of the Arts 2013, in Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, the show’s fourth home in four years.

… A total of 574 pieces were submitted for the 2013 exhibition, selected by Larry Blovits, Adam DeKracker and Scott Garrard.

Blovits, a professor of art at Aquinas College, was the juror for painting and drawing; DeKracker, an associate professor of photography at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University, selected work from photography submissions; and Garrard, an assistant professor of ceramics, sculpture and 3D design at Grand Rapids Community College, judged all three-dimensional and multimedia works.

Saugatuck High School honors 13 Senior Scholars

Saugatuck High School honored 13 Senior Scholars during its Class of 2013 commencement ceremonies Thursday, May 23.

…(Makiah) Eveland plans to study culinary education at Grand Rapids Community College. She is interested in a degree in Vegan nutrition. Eveland was a member of the National Honor Society, student council, and was captain of the softball team, where she earned all-district and -conference honors. She earned an academic excellence Award and all A’s. Eveland volunteered at Douglas Elementary School teaching students nutrition and helping with a softball clinic.

GRCC alumnus Brysien Beer to hold benefit concert

Brysien Beer, a GRCC TRiO/SSS alumni, is very excited to announce that he will be participating in Michigan State University’s “Master Classes at the Centro Studi Carlo Della Giacoma” in Todi, Italy. This program facilitates an intensive Italian language and opera prep course that will prove invaluable to Brysien, both as a student operatic vocalist now and later as a professional. Educational endeavors such as this one are always quite costly. In addition to initial program fees, there are plane tickets to be bought, food and living costs, enrichment field experiences and miscellaneous costs that are encountered during every international adventure. Brysien is holding a concert event to help raise money for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Brysien would really love it if you could join him.

The concert will be May 30, 2013, 7pm, in Grand Rapids Community College’s Music Center. It will feature operatic works by Verdi, Ravel, Schumann and more. There is no admission fee, but donations will be accepted and very much appreciated. Whether or not you can help financially, please come and support with your eyes and ears.
