Smart Zone: Medical Mile incubator expanding role in Grand Rapids startup scene

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — After working behind the scenes of West Michigan’s entrepreneurial sector for the last decade, a tech-driven startup incubator is hoping to raise its profile this year, starting with a christening party Tuesday night, June 4.
… The LDFA, which functions like the city’s Downtown Development Authority, funds GR Current with tax capture money. In 2003, WMSTI was the city’s first Smart Zone incubator, born of parents such as the Van Andel Institute, GVSU, the city, the Right Place economic development group and Grand Rapids Community College.
Trimming student debt: Ferris State, Rockford High School say new program could reduce borrowing

ROCKFORD, MI – In an effort to reduce college costs and help students graduate more quickly, Ferris State University and Rockford Public Schools on Tuesday announced a partnership that will enable high school students to enroll in college-level courses taught at the district this fall.
… Broadly, the program fits into a trend of colleges and K-12 districts working to boost college readiness through dual enrollment and other college preparatory programs.
Grand Rapids Community College, for example, has launched a program known as middle college, in which students at Wyoming High School have an opportunity to earn their high school diploma and an associate’s degree. Davenport University has a similar program with Kenowa Hills High School.
Husband and wife jazz duo perform

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – She plays the piano and he plays the trombone and together they make beautiful jazz music. Husband and wife duo, Robin Connell and Paul Brewer, will be showcasing their talents at two Grand Rapids venues this weekend, but first stopped by eightWest to give viewers a taste of their award-winning sound.
Robin teaches Jazz Piano and Jazz Voice at Grand Rapids Community College and Aquinas College and her husband, Paul, is the Director of Music at Aquinas College. Both artists taught at Interlochen Arts Camp for twenty years and have trained talented musicians including Nora Jones.
