IT’s Prioritized Project List

The Project Prioritization Team (PPT) prioritizes the projects that are submitted to the IT department. The Project Prioritization Team (PPT) met on 6/24 and prioritized the projects that were submitted for the 2013-2014 budget year. This process allows IT to budget and use its resources in the most effective way.

‘Never going to graduate,’ Grand Rapids student finds her way at Turning Point Academy

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Darkresha Wilson, between making bad choices while succumbing to peer pressure and other distractions, considered calling an end to her high school career.

… But she is graduating today because she and her grandmother, Linda McIntosh, found Turning Point Academy two years ago. The academy, a partnership between Grand Rapids Public Schools and Grand Rapids Community College, is designed to help students who aren’t succeeding in the traditional setting and those who have dropped out.

GRCC Giving High School Grads Chance at Jobs and Internships

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.– Kent County’s youth will have the chance to land jobs and internships thanks to Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC).

The event is called Ready Now! for Youth and GRCC’s Upward Bound Program and School of Workforce Development have joined forces with Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids, Kent Intermediate School District, and other organizations for the event.

ADA, MI — Like every other finisher of Sunday’s Grand Rapids Triathlon, Ashley Blaszczak received a commemorative medal upon crossing the finish line.
Blaszczak, however, also received a diamond.

Painting a future: ‘I was going down the wrong road’

When he was 20, Josh Moore was directionless.

He’d dropped out of Lansing Community College. He was selling marijuana, so he could pay for what he was smoking.

He began to turn his life around in 2005, he said, after being arrested for marijuana possession and now is a full-time artist and apprentice for internationally recognized Grand Rapids-based artist Paul Collins.

White Lake festival helps amplify guitar skills for Lakeshore area musicians

MONTAGUE, MI — The faint strum of a musical chord filled Montague’s Book Nook and Java Shop Sunday, June 9, amid chatter and the sound of a coffee machine as a guitarist sat atop the hub’s stage to practice a composition.

… The festival, which began on June 7, featured master classes with local artists and experts, including classical guitarist Brian Morris, a faculty member at Grand Rapids Community College and an associate of the Michigan Arts and Humanities Touring Program.

 

 

 

 

ISO courses start in June 2013

In the ISO 9001:2008 Internal Auditor Training course, you’ll learn how to conduct effective and efficient internal audits. Focus will be given to the requirements of the ISO 9001:2008 standard and how to audit to ensure compliance in your organization. This class is a mixture of teaching the requirements within the standard and a practical exercise that will give actual auditing experience.

You will learn:

  • definition of a process.
  • to identify the processes of your organization.
  • to perform a “Process” audit.
  • to ensure you perform process audits and still cover each requirement of ISO 9001:2008.
  • the components of a valid audit deficiency.
  • to ensure effective corrective action results from internal audits.
  • to ensure your company is prepared for third-party audits.

This course runs 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 26 and 27, 2013; it costs $595. To register, click here.

The ISO 14001 Overview course provides a basic understanding of the ISO 14001 Standard. It includes the concept, development, publication, and evolution of the standard. You will be introduced to each of the ISO 14001 requirements and what is involved in the development of a business system that meets the requirements. You will also learn what to expect during the development and implementation process.

This course runs 8 a.m. to noon June 28 and costs $295. To register, click here.

Staff Development is fortunate to be able to bring in Denise VanEck, owner of Thought Design LLC, to present her stress management workshop at GRCC. This workshop will provide insight into what triggers stress and tools for managing it. De-Stress:  The Art and Science of Managing Stress

In this 90 minute workshop, you will learn what’s really happening in your brain when you get stressed out and some easy (even fun!) ways to manage. You will discover some of your personal stress triggers, how to prevent triggering and how to manage in the moment. You’ll also get some new insight into how the culture and context of your workplace impacts your stress level and some strategies specifically for managing your stress at work.
