Scholarships available for Facilities/Apartment Maintenance Technician program

Scholarships are now available for GRCC’s Facilities/Apartment Maintenance Technician program!

This training program gives you the potential to earn certifications in:

  • lead renovation, repair and painting.
  • HVAC Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Certified Pool Operator.
  • Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician.
  • Home Building Institute Facilities Maintenance Technician.
  • OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety.

Classes run 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 7:30-11:30 a.m. Fridays from October 21, 2013, to January 24, 2014, at Tassell M-TEC. Call Workforce Training at  234-3400 to learn more.

West Michigan songwriters dominate ArtPrize song contest, splitting $10,000 in prizes

Holland — The Top 10 vote-getters in Grand Rapids ArtPrize must wait until this evening to see who snags the $200,000 top prize, but five West Michigan songwriters or bands who entered compositions into the international art competition already have won $2,000 awards for their musical artworks from St. Cecilia Music Center.

… All of this year’s winners have a West Michigan connection, whether living in the Grand Rapids area or, in the case of members of Spring Lake’s Brad Fritcher and his band, attending Grand Valley State University and Grand Rapids Community College.

Federal shutdown shutters Lakeshore Head Start

Holland — The federal government shutdown may seem far away in Washington, D.C., but it will hit home Wednesday for more than 400 Ottawa County kids and their families when their Head Start child care and education programs are cut off.

… Briana Farrell is a nursing student at Grand Rapids Community College and uses reduced-fee day care for Neelah, who is almost 2 years old, so she can attend classes and work a part-time job.

LEED Platinum Awarded to 335 Freyling Place

The house at 335 Freyling Place in Michigan is the 300th Habitat for Humanity of Kent County to achieve the LEED Platinum certification. The 1,519 square-foot, two-story home was designed by Image Design of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and is currently occupied by Karen Libbette and her five children. The house has also received the GreenBuilt Michigan Gold certification and is ZeroStep and 5+ Energy Star certified. The home has a HERS Score 34.

Apart from that, this green building project was also used as a green learning laboratory for over 120 students at Grand Rapids Community College’s Leslie E. Tassell M-TEC and other departments, as well as several students from Ferris State University. In addition to that, the house was also built to blend in seamlessly with the neighborhood’s existing classic 1880s architectural style.

Cardinals visit Ferris in matchup of unbeaten teams in GLIAC

Coach Jim Collins and the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals might well have another shootout game in store when they visit Ferris State in GLIAC football on Saturday.

… “More than anything, it’s what they’re doing on offense,” Collins said of what (Tony) Annese has brought to the Ferris program. “He brought an offense that he was running (successfully) in high school and at Grand Rapids (Community College). And he’s recruited good players.”

College Success Center hosts open house for employees

The College Success Center Team would like to invite you to our Fall 13 Open House: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. October 8, 2013, in 113 of Sneden.

You may have heard about programs we support such as Fast Track, Bridge, ABO, and Reading 095, but would like to know more about our process, interventions, or work in general. This is an opportunity to meet the coaches and ask specific questions about these programs. Also, learn about Fast Track’s success record in saving time, money and helping students skip their placement in developmental education courses.
