Do Parents Make a Difference? An Exploration in Raising a Child

Dr. Kate Byerwalter is a Professor in the Psychology Department at Grand Rapids Community College. In this presentation, Dr. Byerwalter will introduce the current research around the practice of parenting. She will present different parenting styles and explore how culture may affect parenting. In addition, Dr. Byerwalter will identify priorities in parenting. Lastly, she will examine the role of parents in shaping children’s cognitive development. Participants will leave with an understanding of how parents do matter in the development of a child and what practices are connected to the optimal outcomes.

Pharmacy technician course begins this month

The need for certified Pharmacy Technicians is growing dramatically in the West Michigan area. If you are interested in working in the medical field, or are currently working in a pharmacy but would like to be certified, GRCC’s Pharmacy Technician program will prepare you for the next step.

This 19 week pre-certification class will take you through everything you need to know to be ready to take the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Exam. Using textbooks from the American Pharmacists Association, this course will prepare you to be a pharmacy technician at the retail or hospital level. Course goals include completing an internship at a local pharmacy and taking the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.

Arts Outreach showcase to benefit scholarships

Arts Outreach music program invites you to attend their Faculty Showcase and Scholarship Fundraiser on October 17 at 7pm.  The concert will be held in the GRCC Music Center Recital Hall, Room 200.  Admission is $10 for adults and free for children.  All proceeds will directly support student scholarships and financial aid.  The program will feature performances by Loretta Cetkovic, Cassandra Kroondyk, Annette Henry, Cameo Elzinga, Robert Fry, Andrew Bergeron and Carmen Maret of Folias and Dr. Yelena Wells, Arts Outreach Coordinator.
