Surging auto sales a 25th birthday present for Autocam

Oct. 11, 2013; Grand Rapids Business Journal

Making precision parts for high-pressure direct fuel injection systems on automobiles is what drives the growth of Autocam, now celebrating its 25th year, and every time the price of gasoline goes up, it probably adds fuel to that growth.

… One thing Autocam is known for is its Learn and Earn program for employees. It starts as an apprenticeship, with the employee typically working four days a week and attending classes at GRCC on the fifth day. Starting pay is $13 an hour and increases each year, so by the end of the apprenticeship, a starting machinist is earning $17.50.

Wellness Student of the Week: Robert Richardson

Robert’s Wellness Story:

  • Robert Richardson

    Robert Richardson

I’m taking WE 165: Dynamics of Fitness

  • So far, it’s my favorite class!
  • I highly recommended to others because I believe that Health, Fitness & Wellness are the foundation to a happy, productive, fulfilling, well-rounded and overall great life!
  • WE 165 helped me quit Drugs & Alcohol, which has been my biggest struggle in life since childhood (currently age 25).
  • Fun event on my Wellness journey in class: The Art Prize “Scavenger hunt was a ton of fun!
  • Fun event on my Wellness journey before class: This summer I spontaneously (1 day notice/invite!) went skydiving, non-tandem, never having been on an airplane, because of the confidence gained from becoming fit & healthy, starting at the age of 21!
  • I give way more credit to the students who are really trying in class, that aren’t used to Health, Fitness & Wellness and are still trying their best, outside of their comfort zone, than I give myself because this type working is in my comfort zone, “my thing”, and is what I love to do!
  • Professor Kennett Rocks!

Mathematics Seminar set for October 17

The Grand Rapids Community College Mathematics Department will host its next Mathematics Seminar on Thursday, October 17, 3:00 – 4:00 PM in 107 Cook.  Our presenter, GRCC Adjunct Mathematics Instructor Radu Teodorescu, will speak an alternative approach to the concept of percent.  Please see the title and abstract for more information.

The mathematics in this seminar will be accessible to all, and should give attendees a new perspective on a very familiar topic.  Everyone in the greater GRCC community is welcome.

Pop and cookies will be served at 2:45 PM.

 Old News About Percentages

Everyone has heard of percent.  Beginning with pre-algebra, it is taught at GRCC in a variety of courses.  Many of the current methods for teaching percent problems have been used for decades.  This talk will submit an idea slightly different from traditional concepts.  Some may agree with it, many others may have reservations and even objections.  However, it is hoped that many in the audience will be surprised by some of the interpretations revealed during the talk.
