ALLENDALE, MI — Grand Valley State University volleyball coach Deanne Scanlon didn’t have to look far to find a “five-tool setter” who could help transform her young Laker team into a championship threat.

The player, Kaitlyn Wolters, landed in Allendale from 15 miles away at Grand Rapids Community College, where her coach, Chip Will, a former Scanlon assistant at GVSU, saw a potential fit between a player that led the Raider program to a national title and the Lakers, who are trying to claim a second crown since 2005.

Grand Rapids Community College dedicated the foyer of its Ford Fieldhouse on Oct. 16 to name the space the Paganelli Family Foyer.

The Paganelli family’s relationship with the college is steeped in history, with three generations attending GRCC before going on to successful careers. As longtime champions of GRCC, the Paganelli family wished to instill their legacy further, while at the same time provide educational opportunities for future generations of students.

They created the Paganelli Family Scholarship. Setting up a $50,000 endowed scholarship, the family annually awards a $1,000 scholarship to one GRCC student, with preference given to student-athletes. To date, five students have benefited from the scholarship.

“It is wonderful to see the lasting impact Grand Rapids Community College has in our community,” GRCC President Dr. Steven C. Ender said. “We are pleased to have alumni such as the Paganelli family who help ensure the college continues to have a positive impact on the lives of West Michigan residents.”
