West Michigan college presidents announce special scholarship packages for Grand Rapids students

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Four West Michigan college presidents announced Friday, Nov. 8,they have created special scholarship packages to support the Challenge Scholars initiative helping Grand Rapids students perform better academically and stay on the college track.

Aquinas College, Grand Valley State University, Ferris State University, and Grand Rapids Community College are seeking to enhance the initiative launched in 2011 by the Grand Rapids Community Foundation targeting students in three West Side schools: Harrison Park, Westwood Middle and Union High School.

Kent County’s dental checkup reveals oral health crisis, report finds

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Kent County underwent a dental checkup recently, and the results were not good.

… Now, the group is focused on addressing two areas of concern: access to dental care and education. It has been involved in efforts to provide dental care to older adults at Grand Rapids Community College and to create a dental clinic in Kentwood. A partnership between the county and nonprofit Michigan Community Dental Clinics plans to open the clinic in the former library building at 4700 Kalamazoo Ave. SE.

Wright’s Second Half Leads No. 9 Express Women Past No. 10 Monroe College 74-58

Paige Wright (Northrop/Fort Wayne, Ind.) led the No. 9 Express women’s basketball team past No. 10 Monroe College 74-58 in the championship game of the Owens Tip Off Classic tonight.

… The Express (4-1) have now won four straight after their season-opening two-point loss to Kirkwood College. Their next action will be Nov. 13 at Grand Rapids Community College beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The players representing the Grand Valley State University women’s volleyball team have been all smiles on the court lately after a jubilant ascent to the top of the GLIAC.

… The Hudsonville, Mich., native (Kaitlyn Wolters) has been a difference maker for the team after transferring from Grand Rapids Community College, where she won a NJCAA National Championship in 2012. Her championship mentality has brought confidence to a young team that has just two seniors on its roster.
