HAMILTON, Mich.- Five years ago, when baby number three was on the way and there was only going to be 13 months apart from her second child, Lauren Ortiz of Hamilton tried to find ways to save money. She quickly learned that there weren’t really any websites that focused on West Michigan savings opportunities, or at least the places that she loved to shop.

“Originally I started out at GRCC (Grand Rapids Community College) doing a nursing course and I started at the same time because our family. We were growing suddenly, with the children we were having and so we really needed to save money.” 27 year-old Ortiz said. Currently, the need is even more as the Ortiz family proudly includes five children.

Vegan holiday cooking class to instill community, health, fun

Thought Design Learning Studio is ringing in the holidays with their first ever vegan cooking class. Grand Rapids chef, Jason McClearen, will instruct a Vegan Holiday cooking class on Saturday, November 23rd. With the use of four new vegan dishes and their open design kitchen, they hope to continue instilling community and learninga common goal in each of their classes.

… Chef Jason McClearen says that he would like vegan skeptics to show up for the class. He hopes to change peoples views the way his once were. At one point vegan food scared him to bits, says McClearen, but he become a vegan supporter after classes and an internship with Chef Kevin Dunn at GRCC. Now McClearen uses his catering, teaching, and personal chefing to show people the health benefits that veganism can create.

Glen Oaks Vikings eye another successful season

All-GLIAC team: Grand Valley State’s Matt Armstrong named offensive lineman of the year

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Grand Valley State center Matt Armstrong was named the GLIAC offensive lineman of the year to highlight the post-season awards for the Lakers.

… For Ferris State, (Carlin) Landingham , a former player at Grand Rapids Community College, anchored the programs most prolific run team of all-time, including springing quarterback Jason Vander Laan to a quarterback rushing record. He started every game, and made 10 starts last season.
