For those of you that missed today’s stunner of a game between Grand Rapids Community College and Kalamazoo, we’ve got you covered. With 17.5 seconds remaining, the Raiders trailed the Hornets by three with the ball not only did Grand Rapids Arthur Pearson hit a clutch three to tie it up nine seconds left on the clock, but the Raiders actually managed to get a chance at the buzzer after a stop, too. Courtney Hill had to pull off an incredible mid-air catch-and-shoot combo to get the shot off in time, and he executed to perfection game over.

Former Lansing firefighter, sights now set on nursing, gets scholarship to help others

LaughFest 2014: 16 shows sold out, limited seating for Jim Gaffigan in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Gilda’s LaughFest 2014 has sold out 16 shows including the festival debut of Maria Sings and one of two shows with Maria Bamford.

… Gaffigan’s appearance March 7 has only handicapped-accessible seating remaining in the Grand Rapids Community College Ford Fieldhouse. The earlier of two shows by Bamford on March 8 in the Wealthy Theatre is sold out, but tickets remain for the later event.

… (Bob) VanderLugt was raised in an old farmhouse on 44th Street SE where his dad raised pigeons and bunnies. He attended a small Christian school that was part of a church, and graduated from South Christian High. He attended Calvin College and Grand Rapids Junior College, and just returned to Calvin two years ago, where at 52 hes zeroing in on a degree in Writing.

Sometimes a little time off is good for the soul, but Kalamazoo Valley Community College women’s basketball Ron Welch is still not convinced that playing a college basketball game without practicing is a great plan. Because of the recent weather related closings of the college the Cougars had practiced once in the last week, on Tuesday.

The Cougars were able to find their footing and defeat Grand Rapids Community College 69-51 on Wednesday.

Grand Rapids Community College alumnus, guitarist Gideon Whitehead will be the featured GRCC International Guitar Series performer on February 20, 2014. Noted by Cleveland Classical for his ability to “bring out subtle inner details” and to “communicate directly with the listener”, he is quickly establishing himself as an outstanding and captivating artist. In June 2013, he celebrated the release of his debut album Russian Romance featuring rarely-played classical guitar music from Russia. Gideon has performed solo recitals for the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society, the Guitar Society of Michigan, the Sturgis Council of the Arts (Sturgis, MI), the Louisville Guitar Society (Louisville, KY) and Hope College (Holland, MI) among others. In 2012, he made his New York City debut in a concert at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a chamber musician, Gideon has had the honor of collaborating on numerous occasions with world-renowned violinist and Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim. Since beginning his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in 2012, Gideon has premiered two works for guitar and string quartet, along with works for solo guitar, guitar and violin, and a song cycle for soprano and guitar. In addition, he has appeared in chamber music performances for the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society, the Stars in the Classics series in Cleveland, Ohio, and at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, PA. Gideon has earned prizes at the 2011 James Stroud Guitar Competition and the 2010 and 2011 University of Louisville International Guitar Competition.

The concert will be held in the Recital Hall (Room 200) of the Grand Rapids Community College Music Center at the corner of Ransom and Lyon.

Admission is $15 for general admission and $10 for students and seniors.

One dollar parking is available in the GRCC student parking ramp with a GRCC guest parking voucher sold at the door.

The Art Department is excited to announce that the annual Photo Student Exhibition is currently on display in the GRCC Paul Collins Art Gallery, located on the fourth floor of the Main Building.
This year, the exhibition is presented in a new format. The works of more than sixty photography students are exhibited in high definition projection. The loop of images and videos which repeats every 25 minutes is stunning!

Transfer forum scheduled for January 31

As part of our initiative to further the Completion Agenda at GRCC, and specifically to improve our students’ transfer rates, we are offering the last of three Transfer Forums for faculty and staff at the College this Friday, January 31 from 9:00 to 12:00 in the Multipurpose Room of the Student Center (234 SSC).

This interactive session is designed to provide information to faculty and staff about:

  • how to create and align curricula that improve students’ transfer opportunities.
  • how to use advising resources and strategies to improve students’ transition to four-year schools.

The session is also designed to gather ideas about how we can improve transfer at GRCC.

Coffee and a continental breakfast will be served. You do not have to rsvp, but it would be appreciated. Just email Amy Kirkbride at akirkbride@grcc.edu.

If full-time faculty attendees wish, they may receive 3 hours of College Service for their participation in this forum.

GRCC grad grows his start-up into player in off-road products industry

HOLLAND, MI — In the past five years, Andrew Prins has watched his small start-up rev up into a major player in the multi-billion dollar UTV off road industry as a manufacturer of products that make the vehicles stronger and safer.

… “A lot of these vehicles have flaws that don’t show up until you hit a three-foot deep ditch at 60 miles an hour. That’s how we find the problem and fix it,” said Prins, a graduate of Grand Rapids Community College in mechanical engineering.

Couple dies in crash

Luke (Lewis Jr.) Burns, 55, and Gayle Burns, 53, were on their way home Saturday night from a friend’s house where they had gathered for dinner after a meeting of elders from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Grand Haven.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Nearly three months after her son was shot and killed during a robbery attempt outside a South Division Avenue restaurant, Jacqueline Kelley can’t make sense of why the 23-year-old had to die simply because he was at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

… Kelley said she’s going to push herself to seek professional help and return to normal activities, such as cooking and taking classes at Grand Rapids Community College. For now, she’s most comfortable on her living room couch, where she and Floyd spent a lot of time talking.

… NO 4: GRCC sophomore goes large even as team comes up short

Courtney Hill put up more points than anyone in the area last week, with 37 on Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough as the Raiders came up short, 88-85 to Lansing Community College.

Can’t blame Hill, though. The shooting guard was 14 of 24 from the floor, including five of 10 of his 3-pointers. He chipped in three steals, too.

KCC baseball ranked 10th in nation in preseason poll

Medical Assistant class holds pinning ceremony

Last Friday, the July 2013 Medical Assistant class celebrated their completion with a pinning ceremony in the Calkins Science Center. The program brought together graduates, their proud family members, classroom and clinical instructors, as well as Dean Hert and Program Manager, Linda Witte to recognize the students accomplishment.
