Kent ISD, MI — Henry William “Bill” Dungey, Jr. was a lifelong advocate for justice, a champion of causes, and a towering presence who evoked warmth and kindness wherever he went. For Kent County school districts, those qualities made him one of the area’s finest negotiators, say local superintendents and administrators.

… Dungey was honored in 2010 with a Giants Award from Grand Rapids Community College for helping the Kent County Education Association partner with the Salvation Army’s Booth Family Services’ Angel Baby Initiative, which donates diapers, baby food, car seats, toys and educational items to infants in need.

… Honored with the Ethel Coe Humanities Award at the 2005 Grand Rapids Giants Awards, Barrow-Williams appeared in a production of “Showboat” with Circle Theatre, sang arias from Bizet’s “Carmen” for summer concerts at Garfield Park, and sang with the Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus during her many years in West Michigan.

Charsie Sawyer, professor of music at Calvin College, who nominated Barrow-Williams for the award sponsored by Grand Rapids Community College and several African-American organizations, called her “a real trailblazer.”

… Kyle Orlowski, Aquinas College: Orlowski, a senior outfielder, tripled and went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in a 13-10 win over Siena Heights on March 30. Orlowski (Kenowa Hills/GRCC) is batting .313 and leads the team with 14 runs scored. It was the first game for Aquinas (9-7) in more than a week.
