Aquinas baseball sweeps Cornerstone

Grand Rapids, MI- The Aquinas College baseball team swept a conference double-header from cross-town rival Cornerstone yesterday at DeWitt Field. The Saints took game one 7-1, and won 6-4 in the nightcap. Aquinas is now 14-11 on the season and 6-5 in WHAC play.
The top of the lineup was key for the Saints in game one. Kyle Orlowski (Grand Rapids/GRCC), Brendan Penny (Grand Rapids/Catholic Central) and Taylor Pawlanta (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern), the Saints’ 1-3 hitters, each had three hit games. Orlowski scored three runs and Pawlanta drove in two. Third-baseman Greg Baranyai (Hillman/Alpena) had two RBI for the Saints. Junior David Foster (Mt. Pleasant/MCC) earned the win, allowing just one run in seven innings while striking out six.

Livonia Stevensons Amanda Hawkins is among Madonna University women’s volleyball coach Jerry Abraham initial 2014 recruiting class that was announced on Wednesday.
Hawkins, a first-team All-Observer selection, is joined by junior college transfers Emily Johnson (Grandville), a 6-foot outside and middle hitter from Grand Rapids Community College, along with 5-8 setter Spencer Stokes (Clio) of Oakland Community College.

HAMILTON, MI — Hamilton senior Ashley Overbeek wasn’t in high school yet when her future varsity coach first realized that she was going to be a special player.

… Savage (Dion Jr.) attended Arizona Western for one football season, then returned home because he was homesick. He enrolled at nearby Grand Rapids Community College but stopped attending classes.
