MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. – Michigan can gain a competitive edge over other states by filling a skills gap that leads to good jobs going unfilled because of a lack of qualified candidates, Gov. Rick Snyder said Thursday.

Campaign launched to spread the word about free preschool in Kent County

Hunting YMCA, Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative, Grand Rapids Ellington Academy of Arts and Technology, Head Start, Hope Academy, and Grand Rapids Community College. More partners will be added in June 2014.

Grand Rapids’ downtown housing market has reached ‘a point of critical mass,’ report concludes

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Grand Rapids downtown apartment market has reached a point of critical mass that is likely to attract new investors and new developers, a Chicago-based commercial real estate firm concluded in a report published this week.

… One exception was the Lofts at 5 Lyon, a former office building that has been converted to student housing. Rents in the building near Grand Rapids Community College are at $2.31 per square foot the most expensive in the downtown market, thanks to the owners ability get $2,480 a month for a 4-bedroom apartment.

Silver Line bus to start running in August

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The new Silver Line bus system will start running to downtown Grand Rapids a matter of months.

… Thirty-four stops have been set up on the Silver Line route, four of which are still under construction. The bus route will run down Division Avenue and then loop by Mercy Health Saint Mary, the community college and the Medical Mile; along Monroe Avenue downtown; and then around to The Rapid central station off Grandville Avenue SW.

Incoming Volleyball Class Named to PrepVolleyball.coms Top 100

Internet Explorer 10 now available for office computers

Internet Explorer 10 is now available for staff and faculty to install. Please follow the steps below to complete the installation. Note that this installation will require your computer to restart.

1) Launch the Application Explorer from the desktop or from Start > All Programs > Novell ZENworks > ZENworks Application Window

2) Double-Click on Internet Explorer 10 (a window will appear saying “Internet Explorer 10 Installation Notice / System Restart is Required.) Click OK

3) Once the installation has completed, another window will appear to restart the computer. Click Yes to restart computer. Internet Explorer will not work until a restart has been performed.

Unintentional Bias in the Hiring Process

Numerous studies show that our unconscious is dictating our decisions. These unconscious decisions impact our business decisions. The biases we carry may not be limited to visible differences but may extend to other assumptions and associations such as the way a person speaks (tone, volume, and accent) or prior personal knowledge or acquaintance.

In The Unintentional Bias in the Hiring Process workshop, participants will:

• Examine common language and tools for processing unintentional bias situations in the hiring process
• Review our Unintentional Bias in the Hiring Process video

MACRAO Agreement Ending Summer of 2014

The current MACRAO agreement that helps students transfer from Michigan community colleges to Michigan four year institutions is starting a sunset process in fall 2014. This session will answer the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY and HOW and will provide implementation details of the new Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) that will take MACRAO’s place at GRCC.

All faculty and staff are welcome to attend this session to:

• learn about the new MTA
• understand how the MTA will be implemented at GRCC
• learn where to find MTA resources at GRCC
• have your questions answered

Boundaries in the Workplace

Maya Angelou: West Michigan educators recall poet’s impact on students

Davenport’s EJ Grochowalski named Capital One Academic All-America of the Year

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. — Davenport baseball graduate EJ Grochowalski had well understood the balance between the academics and athletics during his senior year, and for that the College Sports Information Directors of America selected the first baseman its Capital One Academic All-America of the Year award Tuesday. The 11-man Capital One All-America College Division Baseball First Team is comprised of student-athletes from the NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions and must own a 3.85 grade-point average.

Grochowalski, who transferred to Davenport from Grand Rapids Community College before the start of the 2013 season, graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA in finance last month.

Watts to pilot John Glenn cagers

Rod Watts established a winning track record during his seven seasons as boys basketball coach at Lansing Eastern and hopes parlay that same success at Westland John Glenn.

Changes to Google Chrome Browser for office computers

A new policy update to GRCC’s version of Google Chrome is being released this week. Users may install the new version from the Application Explorer. Look for the bundle titled “Google Chrome Enterprise”. This version will increase user functionality while also addressing several security issues.

What to expect in the new version:

• Availability of bookmarks – bookmark management is currently unavailable with the existing version of Chrome. The new version will give users the ability to create and manage bookmarks.
• Corrected the “File path too long” error when attempting to download a file.

To Install:

1. Launch the Application Explorer from you desktop OR via Start > All Programs > Novell ZENworks > click on ZENworks Application Window
2. Double-click the icon labeled “Google Chrome Enterprise”
3. View the progress of the installation by Right-clicking the ZENworks icon in the system tray, and selecting “Show Progress”

Terrell Clinkscales (b. June 9, 1992) is that best kind of recruit — one we stole from Nebraska late in the process.

… During his freshman year at Grand Rapids Community College, Clinkscales played the 2011 season for the Raiders prior to the college’s discontinuing the program. He saw time in six games, registering 13 tackles, including six for loss and four sacks, as he helped GRCC to finish with an 11-0 record and a No. 3 national ranking.

Golf team places 9th in national tournament

Congratulations to the GRCC Golf Team as they completed one of the best seasons in recent history with a 9th place finish at the NJCAA DivII National Golf Tournament. The Raiders had a four day total of 1231 led by Jared Multers’s 21st place finish with rounds of 74, 77, 77, 76. Jared was named to the Honorable Mention All-American Tournament Team. The Raiders concluded their spring season with a Conference Championship, MCCAA State Championship, and a 2nd place finish at the NJCAA Region XII tournament.

Congratulations to Mary Reed of the Foundation Office!  Mary, Jeremy and big brother Mason welcomed Bryson James on Saturday, May 24th.  Bryson weighed 6 pounds 6 ounces and was 19 inches long.  Baby and mom are doing great!

Student Alliance seeks president, operations director

Student Alliance is replacing the Student Congress as the intermediary between the GRCC students and administration.

Nic Bush will serve as the new group’s director of external affairs, and Josh Vissers  is the communications director. The organization is seeking a president and an operations director. If you know of a student who might be interested, you can direct him or her to the application and other information on the group’s webpage. The application deadline is 5 p.m. June 6.
