Encore U: It’s Never Too Late To Go To College

Nov. 3, 2014; Forbes

Here is a figure that may stun you: The number of Americans who are 55 and older will grow to 112 million by 2030, according to the United States Census Bureau. That is an increase from 76 million today. Viewed another way, the population of Americans age 55 and older will double in the next 25 years.

… Here are a few examples of Encore U campuses and how they are helping to prepare older adults for new careers:

… Grand Rapids Community College: This campus has created an Older Learner Center to meet the educational needs of older men and women in its community through public events and training programs. For example, they provide health education programming that is funded by the Kent County Senior Millage. These services benefit local residents age 60 and over.

Krispy Kreme TRiO Fundraiser TODAY

The TRIO/Student Support Services Program is holding a fund-raising effort TODAY to support a 5th grade student Mikerlange in Haiti. TRIO/SSS has worked for the past couple of years to support The Power of Education Foundation and their mission through the school they run in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. This year we have chosen to Sponsor a Child and we need your support in making this effort real!

We are selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts for $0.75 ea. You may stop by the TRiO Office in the Student Center Build. Rm.368 and see Maggie to buy your doughnuts.  You may also, run into TRiO Peer Mentors walking around campus today with carts full of doughnuts, be sure to buy yours and help Sponsor our Child Mikerlange through the Power of Education.

And we thank you in advance for your support!

Admissions Office hosts open house

The Admissions Office hosted its Annual Fall Open House this past Saturday. The event took place in the ATC and was a huge success. Prospective students were invited to campus to learn more about GRCC. Presentations were offered by Admissions, Financial Aid and Academic Advising staff. Campus tours were given. Accuplacer testing and online applications were available. Plus, there was a Resource Fair where almost 30 of our departments/programs were represented. Throughout the course of the day we saw about 400 people. If your department was not able to make it, don’t worry. We have another Open House planned for the spring on Saturday March 14th. An invitation to participate will be sent to all Department Heads and Program Directors. If you would like to be included, please contact your Department Head or Program Director.

Thank you to all staff who attended. We heard many positive comments from the students who were here. A special thank you also goes out to Bayard Brooks for his help with all the set up and prep work and Luba Petrash for keeping everyone fed!
