GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Classes have been canceled for thousands of local college students Tuesday, Nov. 18, because of severe winter weather, including students at Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Valley State University.

Student presents research on hardwood forests
On Saturday, Nov. 15th, one of GRCC’s students, Jim Jenson, presented his research on the “Ordination and Classification of Mesic Hardwood Forests”at the West Michigan Regional Undergraduate Research Conference. He and over 130 other students from area colleges and universities convened to present their work to peers, faculty and area researchers. He was accompanied by his research mentor, Dr. Pam Laureto as well as Dr. Leunk and Prof. Foster from the Biological Sciences Department.

Who? You and 54 of your closest friends (GRCC and non-GRCC people welcome). The bus does have a DVD player and monitors – so bring your favorite movie along and arm wrestle to see whose movie gets watched.
What? Day trip to Chicago for holiday shopping
Where? Meet in the Administration Building parking lot (415 Fulton Ave.) hop on the bus and head to Chicago’s Magnificent Mile.
When? Saturday, December 13th, departing 7:30 AM and departing Chicago at 6:30 PM (Michigan time) returning to Grand Rapids around 10:00 PM.
Why? Last minute food, fun and shopping!
How? A $30.00 (non-refundable) ticket must be purchased from Julie Otte before November 25, which includes your transportation to and from Chicago as well as a tip for the driver.
**Disclaimer: we need to have at least 45 people to attend to make this trip be a go. If we do not have enough individuals signed up, the money will be returned to the employees. Space limited to the first 55 individuals who purchase a ticket.

GRCC makes list of Top 50 Employers
Grand Rapids Community College is No. 20 on HBCU Connect’s 2014 Top Employers rankings. HBCU Connect is a publication put out by Historically Black Colleges & Universities.
According to the HBCU, its criteria for the list includes “a company’s HBCU specific outreach, conversations with the companies to learn about their recruitment efforts, relationships the companies have with HBCUs or alumni organizations, and the overall visibility of the efforts made by the companies being considered. Consideration for the actual rankings for the companies was based on their consistency in effort, level of investment, actual hires and creativity in their outreach.”

Math Seminar features Alejandro Saldivar
The Grand Rapids Community College Mathematics Department will host its next Mathematics Seminar on Thursday, November 20, 3:00-4:00 PM in 104 Cook. Our speaker will be GRCC Mathematics Instructor Alejandro Saldivar. The title and abstract for Alejandro’s talk may be found below.
This seminar will focus on a result that appears to be impossible: How can there be a one-to-one correspondence between the points on a line segment and the points in a square that has that line segment as its base? Those who attend can expect to have their intuition challenged and will be exposed to ideas that are at once surprising, powerful and beautiful. This talk is intended for anybody who likes and enjoys mathematics for mathematics’ sake; of course, all are welcome.

A Quest to find a One-to-One and Onto function from the line segment [0,1] to the square plane region [0,1]x[0,1]
Many theorems in mathematics address the existence or non-existence of mathematical objects such as solutions to equations; however, finding an actual and precise mathematical object can be an exciting and, at times frustrating, quest. In this seminar we will talk about one-to-one and onto functions between sets, and the challenges involved in finding a one-to-one and onto function. Along the way, we will discuss decimals extensively.
