Protest demands justice, questions future of black community

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Community members came together Saturday night in Veterans Park to protest what they are calling the unlawful deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner and what they have to stay about how its affecting their communities.

… The Black Student Union at Grand Rapids Community College organized a peaceful protest in Veterans Park with the message that they are standing together with all the protesters across the country in their fight for justice. More than that, the killings were done by those who are supposed to serve and protect: police officers.

Innovation academies put Grand Rapids high school students on vocation-focused paths

Students at Innovation Central High School in Grand Rapids study construction drawings in the classroom before going out into the field with hammer guns and nails to get their hands dirty building houses with Habitat for Humanity.

… Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine, Grand Valley State University, Western Michigan University, Grand Rapids Community College and Spectrum Health are represented on the advisory council of the Academy of Health Science & Technology. Also on the advisory boards are teachers from each school.

Pantry donations sought at Holiday Breakfast on December 12

The Holiday Breakfast is THIS Friday at 7:30 a.m. in Ford Fieldhouse.

Once again this year, we are asking for faculty and staff to bring nonperishable food items as well as basic health and beauty items for donation to the Student Food Pantry. A listing of items needed can be found at: http://www.grcc.edu/studentlife/servicesandprograms/studentfoodpantry

We will also be selling copies of 100th anniversary commemorative book that details the history of GRJC/GRCC through the stories and pictures of students and employees. Open Door: Grand Rapids Community College 1914-2014 is written by Walter Lockwood. The book cost is $40. GET YOURS IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS!

Book signing to be held today

A book signing will be held by Open Door: Grand Rapids Community College 1914-2014 author Walter Lockwood from noon to 2 p.m. today in the GRCC Library and Learning Commons. Light snacks will be served. This 100th anniversary book details the history of GRJC / GRCC through the stories and pictures of students and employees. It is now on sale in the Library and online for $40.
