Wyoming Public Schools, MI — When her mother died last summer, Wyoming Senior Tashia Sheneman lost a permanent place to live and has since moved several times. One of the few constants in her life is Wyoming’s Frontiers Program, where she receives much more than instruction.

… “I’m good. I’m doing better than I was out there,” said Tashia, referring to the traditional high school program. “I feel like you have more support … and it’s more on your time and it prepares you for college,” she added, sharing plans to attend Grand Rapids Community College before attending Ferris State University to pursue her career goal of becoming a probation officer.

ways-to-give-fb-image

In celebration of Computer Science Education Week and to celebrate GRCC’s 100th birthday, the CIS department is hosting a 100 Hours of Code Event this Thursday. We have about 50 students already registered, and collectively they have pledged to donate over 100 hours of coding on Thursday alone.

  • You can do this face to face and show up anytime between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in 214 ATC on December 11 to participate. We will have goodies, and great fun.
  • You can also do this online via BlackBoard, so be sure to log into BB during that time.
  • There will be a variety of tutorials you can follow.
  • Each student who participates will be sent a Certificate of Completion. This Certification of Completion is something you can put on your resume to demonstrate to future employers your dedicated to Computer Science Education. Remember…Code.org is a non-profit dedicated to expanding computer science education. The Code.org vision is that computer science should be part of the core curriculum in every school, alongside other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses, such as biology, physics, chemistry and algebra. This is just another way to show your employer you are dedicated to the field.

Raider Salute to Stacey Herrick

The Campus LGBT Task Force wants to send out a Raider Salute to Stacey Herrick for searching throughout the entire campus to identify all the single-stall, locking bathrooms. In order to increase safe restroom access for transgender and other campus community members who may feel uncomfortable or unsafe utilizing female- or male-designated restrooms, the identified restrooms will all be labeled “unisex” (i.e., gender-inclusive). A listing of their locations are currently posted online: http://cms.grcc.edu/socialsciences/genderstudies/campusgenderrelatedfacilities

We will soon have these locations posted on select departmental web sites as well. Thanks, Stacey!!
