Kent County judge reflects on leadership, shares stories from the bench

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Kent County District Judge Sara Smolenski has seen a lot during her time on the bench.

… “But I believed in myself,” said Smolenski, a Grand Rapids native who’s an alumna of Grand Rapids Community College, the University of Michigan and Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

The Grand Valley State men’s and women’s basketball teams will cross the Mackinac Bridge hoping to improve their road records this week at Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech.

… The transfers, Amanda Glaza (Grand Rapids Community College) and Danielle McCormick (Indiana State), are on campus this semester.

Call For Nominations – Student Leadership Awards

It is time to start considering student leaders and staff/faculty for the awards presented at the annual Student Leadership Banquet. There are four student leadership awards and one award for staff/faculty. Please take the time to appreciate those that are doing outstanding work for our GRCC community by nominating them for one of the awards. Each of the student leadership awards have a cash and plaque reward associated with them.

Programs organized for young professionals at GRCC

As a new generation of leaders emerges in higher education, open dialogue about taking initiative, being innovative, and encouraging young talent has become a need. Young professionals at Grand Valley State University and Grand Rapids Community College have organized a variety of programs that are designed to help young professionals have a successful and satisfying career in higher education. These programs will allow young professionals to learn, develop and network with other young professionals within their community.

Please join us for the following events:

  • Re-framing Generational Differences – Moving Away from “Us vs. Them” – Thursday, February 5, 2015 from 12-1 p.m. in Room 1142, Kirrkof Center, GVSU Allendale campus.
  • Young Professionals Going From “Today” to “Tomorrow” – A Networking Event with Higher Education Leaders. This interactive session will allow young professionals to engage in meaningful dialogue with leaders in higher education from the West Michigan area. Seek advice about career goals that will hopefully leave you feeling more informed and energized about your future. Tuesday, March 17, 2015 – 7:30 to 8:30am in the UClub – Richard M DeVos Center, GVSU GR campus.
