GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A power outage downtown has Grand Rapids Community College classes delayed Thursday morning, Feb. 5.

MANSFIELD — His nickname in high school was “Super Fly,” but that was a misnomer.

… (Melvin) Selmon, in fact, was Mayfield’s first hire when assembling his staff, thanks to the endorsement of Selmon’s brother, David, who had won 416 games in 19 years as the coach at Grand Rapids Community College. The Selmon brothers formed Malabar’s backcourt in the 1982-83 season when David was a senior and Melvin was a sophomore.

GRCC Staff Prayer Meeting

Harry Lew and Paul Phifer, advisors of the GRCC Christian Fellowship, invites all administrators, faculty, and staff to an interdenominational prayer meeting this Monday, February 9, from 12:00 to 12:50 PM in Student Center Room 336.

‘Open Door’ book includes orange stripe tale, other little-known stories

OD dust jkt (IMG_6741)Did you know that Language Arts instructor Keith Longberg once painted a bright orange stripe from the sixth-floor elevator down 200 feet of hallway and around a corner where it became an arrow pointing to his office? He did it in protest of the drab confines of the GRJC West Building. Though Longberg was billed for the removal of the arrow, Language Arts colleagues, in the name of aesthetics, took up a collection in his support.

Changes made to policies

Changes were recently made to several college policies:


Revised Policy 12.8 Events on Campus and Amplified Sound (revised) Policy Section 12.0 Subsection 12.8

Effective February 3, 2015

  • The appeal process has been eliminated, as the Provost decision is final.
  • Changed the number of weeks to submit the original request from five to four.
  • Changed the notification of all staff to the appropriate staff.
  • Added the Lakeshore Campus to the Policy.

Revised Policy 15.1 Personally Identifiable Information(revised) Policy Section 15.0 Subsection 15.1

Effective February 3, 2015

  • Replaced “All electronic files that contain Protected PII will reside within a GRCC information system. Do not store PII on the S: or J: network drives.” With “All electronic files that contain Protected PII will reside within a protected GRCC information system location.”
